I need server os…

January 24th, 2020

Hello,
I’m currently running Windows Server 2003 and have grown a bit tired of it. I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestion for a different operating system for my server? I’m looking for something that is very basic and streamlined. I want to use this server primarily for media storage/streaming but also be able to dump and share files around my home. This is the unit that I currently have…

The biggest question I have is how the hell would I install anything on this machine? It doesn’t have any dvd drive and no display port. It’s just a machine with hard drives. I can access it currently through a remote connection from another computer without a hitch, but in terms of installing something new. Can that even be done?
Thanks for any help on the matter…

Looks like an terrible purchase, best advice would be to bin it and start again the way you should have with a server or pc case and generic pc components. Your going to be crippled without an x64 CPU. Even an atom board would be better than this junk and they’re only 80 dollars with CPU embedded.

To be honest 2GB of RAM is not very much for a windows server 2008/2012. They really need at least 3-4 GB minimum. You might be able to squeeze by depending on how memory intensive your applications are on the server. Should probably stick with 2003 if you want Windows.

Well we gotta start somewhere I guess. In retrospect, I would have definitely taken your approach but oh well.
I’m going to try and install ubuntu on it and see what happens. I’ll make it my experiment and see if I can salvage it.

Don’t use Ubuntu! If you want Debian, use Debian.
I strongly recommend CentOS…

Don't use Ubuntu!
Why not ?

I have the same server although I didn’t pay any where close to what they are asking at the link you provided. I primarily use it for backup and storage and it seems to work fine for my purposes. I am always looking to learn so I would be interested in hearing about what you decide change to (if you do). They do have information on You Got Served forums on how to install different os’s and the processor you have is based on x64 technology. I have read about people upgrading to Windows Home Server 2011. From what I have seen the lights don’t work on the side when you do that though and it slows things down, so I don’t really like the idea of going to WHS 2011. Currently I am running WHS v1 on mine and with WD20Ears hard drives (jumpering 7 & 8 pins) I found that uninstalling Mcafee made a big difference and not updating WHS resolved a lot of problems I was having.

Hey!
I actually bought this unit a few years ago. I didn’t pay anywhere near the price listed on Amazon either just for clarification.
I went ahead and installed Ubuntu onto the unit. Because the machine is headless(no monitor output), I actually had to take the hard drive out of the machine and put it into another computer and THEN install Ubuntu. Currently, it seems to be working alright but I am having a few hiccups.
1) I can’t remote desktop connect to this thing.
2) The lights on the drive bays are not working anymore
Other then that, I was able to share folders without a hitch. I am able to access the server from everywhere easily. I can store files, delete files and create new folders easily. It’s just those two little things that I mentioned above. I don’t even care about the lights, I just want to remote connect into this thing so I can add any extra HD’s in the future.
I’ll let you know how this Frankenstein experiment comes along!

Alright… I was able to figure out how to create a remote desktop connection via some tutorials on YouTube.
All in all, everything is working like a charm minus the LED lights on the drive bays. I’m able to RD from every computer in the house and manipulate anything I need to. I’ve also been able to stream my Blu-Ray mkv rips, full quality without a hitch to my TV in the living room.
All in all, things seem to be working wonderfully!
