How to convert mkv into mp4/m4v for ipad 4

I got an ipad 4 recently and have a bunch of mkv movies (1080p) that I want to watch, but the iTunes doesn’t allow you to transfer over mkv files!
So I was wondering what’s the best way to do this, so that I can watch the movies on the default ipad player. Any help would be much appreciated… Thanks!

Maybe handbrake could do it.

yes these is exactly i was looking for but still i can find how…so i was wondering can any body can give wer i can download m4v/m4a format w/s itunes so that i can transfer to my iphone
and also all you give converter is not working… bcoz M4V format not MP4..

Just install vlc on the ipad. It can play everything u throw at it. Why would u want to go through the process of converting when the ipad can play it?
