how do I extract the data from my old hard drives

August 3rd, 2016

My old computer had the type of hard drives with a lot of pins like this
Image
Old Pc died so I got a new the New one Has a different hard drives like this on
Image NOw how do I extract the data that I have in the old hard drives. I bought a USB kit off ebay doesnt work! any ideas? anybody know how much do the PC rip off places charge for extracting data

Answer #1
The old hard drive is an IDE drive, your new own is a SATA drive.
Most PC’s have connections for both so you should be able to fit both to your new machine.
See here for advice how to:-
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-hard-drive.htm
or check on youtube for video tutorials.
Answer #2
As said ^ your motherboard should have at least one IDE slot,Just hook it up
internally,No need to screw it in,Just leave it standing til you get your data off
then disconnect it,If you gave out/sold your old PC and don’t have an IDE cable
just buy one,Do note you’ll have to define the drive to master and hook up the IDE cable properly,Refer to this topic:
http://www.google.com?t=6405627
Answer #3
Connect the old HDD with the PATA cable and the new HDD with the SATA cable. Connect with the Motherboard, then boot your computer and after that take all the data from your old HDD.
Answer #4
I see I was thinking of doing the cable thing yes my motherboard has a slot wasnt sure how to. Thanx a lot guys will give it a shot and buy a IDE cable
Answer #5
OK I got the cable tried to load NOTHING.
ON my new pc I have one SATA Drive I got Windows 7 installed on the old pc I had two IDE Drives with one having Windoes XP
So I left the SATA connected Plunged the ide cable put the IDE drive with widows xp as slave. I Boot Win 7 everything loads up I dont see any other hard drives Just the SATA one. checked with device manager nothing
So I switch drives now I connect the IDE with no windows as slave Try to boot the SATA with win 7 NOTHING! I just get the blinking dash on the coner
So I disconnect the SATA Put the IDE with Win Xp as Master and the other IDE drive as Slave Load the drive with win xp NOTHING! just dashing line!
SO I just Load the IDE with win xp as Master with no other drives still I GET NOTHING but the dashing line ?
WTF?

You did read the post i referred you to right? Master/Slave
depends on 2 factors (Jumper & Cable positioning) if you
didn’t set up both correctly it wont fly. You’re aware
there’s a thing called boot device priority right?.. And do keep
your SATA drive connected! It has to be set as
the first device,You cannot boot windows from your old
HDD,It’ll just BSOD.

yeah I read your post Now If I keep my SATA drive connected and connect one of the IDE drives do I have to connect it to the Slave IDe cable? And How do I get to the Boot device priority? When I get to the boot screen the SATA drive with windows is the last one how do I make that 1. I dont have much experience with the boot and setup options! your help much appreciated
Answer #8
There’s no correlation between your SATA drive to the IDE one,These
are two different interfaces, but generally speaking when connecting
a single IDE drive it’s recommended to set it as Master (Again, this depends
on the jumper position too,Not just cable positioning). To get to the boot device priority settings you have to enter the BIOS,This is usually done by pressing DELETE or F2 (intel motherboards) after powering up.
You may need to press it constantly (press and release) til you get in,Other than that
i can’t get specific as each bios is a little different,You’ll just have to find your way.

thanx for you help much appreciated I give up my bios is ~ censored ~. I switched the drive priority in the boot setup and when I go to boot the IDE drive is as the 1st master and the SATA is as the 3rd I switched again put the IDE as slave it still shows up as 1st Slav and the system wont boot the SATA first, Its a shame I had some nice music on my old hard drives but ~ censored ~ it. Thanx again
Answer #10
Hard Drive Priority and Boot priority are not one of the same,You clearly
did something wrong,And let me just clarify one thing,The drive
listing on post (initial bios screen) that shows the drive listing
like this:
IDE Primary Master – Drive A
IDE Primary Slave – Drive B
IDE Secondary Master – Drive C
IDE Secondary Slave – Drive D
Has nothing to do (no connection whatsoever) with
the boot device priority this is not suppose to change.
Anyways,Despite of this being an easy task i see your having
a hard time so I’m gonna give you another way out which
will require no special configuration on your part,Go to a computer
store and buy a 3.5″ IDE External Enclosure,This will turn your old
HDD to external,Just put it in there and hookup via USB,It should
be identified without issues. Good luck!

I tried dozens of different ways and it still wont load. I bought the the usb converter kit a while back tried that and nothing pops up. I dont think that works with vista or win7 so I still got to try it on xp. Im give it a shot at my school computers see how that goes. Thanx for trying though
Answer #12
Are you connecting the power (PATA Power) to the IDE drive as well as the IDE cable ?
I use a HDD Docking station which connects via USB, which also supports IDE, SATA, 2.5 SATA (laptop HDDs) and built-in card reader (SD etc)
Some of these Docking Stations dont support WD IDE drives so beware if you buy one..
Docking stations can be used as a external drive to store data
Something like this

You cant. On the Ide adaptor one side has female pin plug other side has usb how do you connect power to it?
this is what i have. IDE/SATA to USB, and the power plug for the hard drive. I connect everything put usb in Pc NOthing happens
Image

Answer #14
well from the pics shown, theres a power plug for it, its the adaptor one that goes from SATA power to the 4 pin PATA, the one with the white plug on one end and the black SATA on other end, i cant see the power cables clear enough, but the drive does need power, it should be there
The adaptor doesnt have built-in power support, as USB ports wont power it, USB power is 5volt the drive needs 12volt
Edit:
Im wondering if the cable that comes out of the power supply has a female 4 pin on the end ? if it does, then that would be the power for it

so I connect the white and black one to the SATA slot in the IDE/SATA Usb converter power that up and then power up the hard drive?
Answer #16
yea, which ever way it fits as long as u have the power connected, it should work in the USB
Answer #17
yea, which ever way it fits as long as u have the power connected, it should work in the USBDont work I still get nothing. I power up the hard drive I hear it spin, I plug SATA power from motherboard to the SATA adapter slot plug the IDE slot in the hard drive plug USB nothing pops up?
checked device manager checked the usb slots nothing! tried the other hard drive still nothing. I think its the OS im try it in XP see how that goes. I was looking around on google and read in a couple of forums that the adapter doesnt need any power its fed through the USB. http://tekgems.com/Products/tg-usb-sata-ide-25-35.htm
* Where do I put the power plug for my 2.5-in IDE hard disk drive? A 2.5-in IDE drive will draw the required power from the USB port. You only need to connect the USB to SATA/IDE adapter to the 2.5-in IDE HDD.

You’re suppose to connect it like this,Directly to the drive!

Thats what i was saying, im glad u put that other pic as it confirms what that cable end was, a female 4 pin (PATA)

thats how I did the first time I can hear the hard drive spin but I get nothing on the pc. Im try it on another computer and see how that goes
Answer #21
Try another USB port,Preferably in the back,Also check
if it’s recognized on device manager,Goto start>run (or press winkey+r)
type devmgmt.msc and hit ENTER,Expand “Disk Drives” and see if it appears.
If it’s recognized then you’ll probably have to run a data recovery app,I recommend
file scavenger,If it’s not recognized then there are two possibilities,Either the HDD
is faulty or the adapter is,You mentioned you have 2 IDE HDDs,If this occurs
with both of em then it’s far more likely that it’s the adapter,In that case
just go to a computer store and buy a 3.5″ IDE External Enclosure,This will
surely work.
Answer #22
if its for IDE it wouldnt have anything to do with the way the pins are connected on the back would it? (the jumper pins…. )

I already guided him bout that but you may have a point there,He should try it jumper free,That might work.
Answer #24
Just wanted to make sure as its the first thing thats pointed out in the windows picture shown….. Can be a PITA to read them pins like.

Ok I tried it on the back USB slots, I set pins in Master Mode got nothing I set pins in Slave got Nothing I removed the pinn connector no jumper both hard drives and still get nothing. My adapter is brand new, I ordered this a while back from ebay it come from china. So it might have been messed up I dont know but Im a give it a shot in another computer and if that dont work im try bying a different IDE enxlosure will update how it goes. thanx for trying to help
and one more question for you guys whats a 2.5″ hard drive and 3.5″ is the 2.5 for laptops and the other one for pcs?
Answer #26
well i found the problem I opened up the adapter and one of the wires is disconnected from the board red wire ~ censored ~ Chinese pice of ~love~ LOL ill try soldering it and see if it works
Answer #27
OK I managed to glue the wire to the board I get pop up and under device manager I can see the hard drive, problem is windows wont install driver it says I have unknown device and under my computer I dont see the hard drive how do I access it where can I get driver for win 7
Answer #28
No special drivers required,Seems the loose wire wasn’t the only problem!
Just go get an external enclosure and it should work 100%

and one more question for you guys whats a 2.5" hard drive and 3.5" is the 2.5 for laptops and the other one for pcs?

Yep 2.5″ are for laptops while 3.5″ are for desktops,That’s as far
as internals go,There are also 2.5″ externals but this is not correlated
and can be used with a desktop just the same,2.5″ externals are
more portable and are USB powered (unlike in 3.5″ externals which require
an AC adapter)
Answer #29
they say that only xp doesnt need drivers I was looking around other people using win 7 have same problem need driver
Answer #30
Trust me dude,No drivers are needed for external storage devices,It’s no different
then connecting a flash drive,Getting the enclosure would be the best way to go.

Bad AC adapter underpowering it,Short Circuit,Bad USB cable,1st
or 2nd are more likely,Anyways just get the enclosure and it’ll be all good.

Answer #35
So you bought another IDE>USB adapter? You should really buy an enclosure,Those are far more reliable.

Glad to hear,You kinda got me confused by calling it an “adapter”
and just so you know,You got ripped off,These things usually
cost $30-40.
Anyways i suggest you try to recover the data using file
