Jailbreak your apple tv and install plex on the apple tv. Then install plex media server on your computer if it is a Windows computer or just plex also on your mac.

You need to Jailbreak the Apple TV. You can then watch your own movies on it and stream them from you laptop or external hard drive if you have it connected. You still have to purchase the Apple TV shows and Movies if you want to watch them. Google ‘Jailbreak Apple TV’. Make sure you are getting a version that works with the firmware version you have on your Apple TV. Obviously.
