Help with display adapter

August 3rd, 2016

Hey,
Today I got my new PC and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit on it. I have an a Radeon HD5770 display adapter. Here are the specifications for the GPU:
ATI Radeon HD 5700 series
1 GB GDDR5
DirectX 11.0 support
The model is MSI R5770

Now if I check GPU-z or Everest I’m getting the correct information for the card, meaning 1GB memory, DX11.0/SM 5.0 support, etc.
However, when I run the DX diagnostics tool (dxdiag) I’m getting funky information:
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI display adapter (0x68B8)
Display Memory: 2786 MB

I have tried updating drivers from both the official ATI site, MSI site and the driver disk received with the GPU. The driver version I have is 8.681.0.0.
I haven’t tried running any games or anything yet, didn’t have the time. However, even though the DX tool claims it’s version 11.0 when I tried online tools such as System Requirements Lab’s “Can You Run It?” I get a 2.7GB memory, dx 10.0 and ATI display adapter (0x68B8) Video card.
(As for the weird 2.7 GB reading I think it’s 1GB physical memory and 1.7 shared memory – whatever that means). Anyone dealt with anything like that? A Google search didn’t really help. I’m weirded out by the weird DX reading
Any tips would be appreciated…

Answer #1
There’s nothing wrong with your Direct X reading. As you say it’s just due to system shared memory. If the card works as intended, don’t worry
Answer #2
Yeah, but still. Shouldn’t it read the Video card as HD5770 and not ATI display adapter (0x68B8)?
BTW, I’m the OP. I’m just logged on at the office so I’m not using my original account…
Answer #3
Probably but again, it’s not something I would be bothered about unless there was a problem with my system.
Answer #4
Another thing then…should I disable shared memory? My GPU has 1024MB physical memory which is plenty. My PC has 4096MB DDR3 RAM and if the GPU draws 1.7GB from the RAM it might cause delayed performance.
Answer #5
i dont think you can disable shared memory on your video card, but i am not an expert on this, but just been reading around.
and i expect windows 7 uses up a lot of memory, so you will have to put up with it i guess. not unless any experts here say otherwise!!!

I’ve a feeling the memory that is shared is virtual, it doesn’t eat away at your standard system memory. More likely is that the extra system memory would only be used if you used all your graphics card RAM however that’s extremely unlikely
