Hard drive compatibility? [SOLVED]

July 25th, 2016

Hey,
I recently bought a 2TB hard drive and i have it connected to my current set up (as slave of course) so i can move all my media from the hard drive on my current set up to my new set up because i will be getting rid of my current set up. Basically after i have moved everything onto the 2TB hard drive i will be installing it into my new setup (as the slave) in which i will have a new motherboard, it will be used specifically for storage of media as i have an SSD as my main drive with the OS on it. The question i wanted to ask is will everything be good to go if i just connect the 2TB into my current setup move everything on to it, disconnect it and connect it to my new setup? Should everything be fine when i boot up like normal?

Answer #1
If you want to boot to it then it’s advisable to use a clone or copy program like Acronis or Macrium Reflect, et al.
Just copying the files yourself via windows explorer WILL leave some behind – windows has a hissy fit when you ask it to copy active/open files – those programs ingore that or use a shadow copy method.
Make sure it’s active and bootable on the partition (again, those progs will handle it) and you should be fine – I’ve done my lappy, when it had a dying drive, like this.
Answer #2
I don’t need to boot to it, i have another drive to boot too, this drive is just for storage of media.
Yeah i know how windows wont let you copy files being used, i am just really copying over songs, movies, important documents etc. not everything on the drive.
So it should be fine as a secondary drive for my new setup? It wont have any problems with being used on different motherboards?
Answer #3
Just for storage you will have no problems.
When you install the OS on the SSD, then afterwards I suggest to connect it, just so that you don’t install on the storage drive, many people do this especially when they are tired (or drunk, lol)

haha i will make sure not to make that mistake, thank you for the help!
