Graphics card for the next gen

August 17th, 2022

I’ve been holding on to my GTX 460 SE for some time now, since (for the most part) I haven’t had too much trouble handling the games I was playing on, but now with all these next-gen games coming out I can see my computer is now having some real problems playing them outside of the low settings. So I ask you, what should be my next graphics card upgrade? Two options! A graphics card that’s affordable and still get the job done and/or your choice of graphics card with no expense boundaries that’ll handle it!
Answer #1
gtx 970 has best price/performance ratio among high range gpus , gtx 980 is the most powerful single gpu currently , it has average %12-13 performance increase over gtx 970 at 1080p gaming. but its price is %30-40 more than gtx 970 so not making it as one best price/performance gpus. that will answer both of your questions i guess it is not wise to spend much money on other gpu than those for now , it may change with future releases.
Answer #2
Get a 970. Its in the 300ish. Its going to handle what you throw at it. Unless you play in a very high resolution and/or using multiple monitor.
The 980 is around 500ish. One of the best. End of story.
How the price now. I consider its being cheap. I remember when I brought my 780s it cost nearly 700 a piece. As you can see I am not mentioning any ATI card since I have not used them for many years.
Answer #3
No point in getting a 980 when for a little more you could get another 970
Answer #4
Thanks everyone! I was actually looking at the GTX 970 earlier. Guess I was right thinking that was the one!
Answer #5
depending on what your planning , choice between gtx 970 and gtx 980 should be different , if you are planning 4K gaming in the future i suggest you to buy gtx 980 , none of single 970 or 980 can handle 4K but when you go for sli you will see the real power of gtx 980 , and the difference wont be same as the difference between single 970 and 980. if you just want a single gpu , and wanna use it as long as you can , then gtx 970 should be your choice
currently you should buy nothing else than nvidia maxwell architecture , currently there is only 740 , 740ti , 750 , 750ti , 970 and 980 , but will be available more model in the future if you want. release of maxwell dropped prices of amd , but dont be fooled cuz of price , maxwell is the greatest leap through on gpu technology in recent years and probably there wont be better anything until mid 2016 when nvidia planning to release new architecture
Answer #6
The GTX 970 is a great choice Its kinda surprising though that a GTX 460 SE can only handle games on low specs Its an old, mid-range card, but i would suspect that it should be able to handle games on medium-high settings
Answer #7
It was doing great till I tried playing FarCry 4, Assassin’s Creed Unity, and stuff like that. I blame poor optimization, but I’ve had this thing for awhile and it seems like a good time to upgrade.
Answer #8
optimization have a part in it but main reason it is how the industry goes , if you can run the games which has top graphics now , with a medium range gpu that is released 3-4 years ago , how would those gpu manufacturers will earn money ? today situation is far better now than the past , i remember buying a new gpu every year at late 90s to be able to play games , i cant even correctly remember name of gpu, it was tnt i guess.
edit : i found the it lol
