Firefox is using 600mb of ram, and is runing slow

I have XP SP3 and Firefox 3, my computer is normally fast with everything it does but for some reason Firefox is going slow as hell!

Disable your antivirus, Start Menu > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (safe mode)
Disable addons and start FF. Keep using like that for a a while and see if it still causes the memory leak.

Wow, 600 mb??? i think that is the problem there, or maybe a tab in your firefox is causing the problem

Basics first: back up your addons and bookmarks and uninstrall
Now do a full registry clean with some registry cleaning app such as Tuneup Utilities 2009
Now re-install FF v3
If you still have the same problem, do a full spyware clean. Spyware/malware are known causes for sytem instability/slowness
