Finding forgotten password lasts very (too) long?

August 4th, 2016

As I read about the WinRar password cracker or other password crackers, it sounds to me as if it would be very easy to find / recover a forgotten password, as if it were any problem. But trying to recover a password of a rar-file with e.g. Recovery Kit Forensic it displays to take about 4 month or 2 years, what appears to be ridiculous in my opinion.
So, am I missing anything? How could I recover a password wisely?
Best wishes, Biff

Answer #1
yes takes very long, this is because it uses the bruteforce technique, wich tries all possible passwords
Maybe u could try a dictionairy crack, if its an easy password that goes way faster, but that only works when the password is a real word not like A3^%a or something

Thank you, ,
So then finding a password created (may be) with all kind of characters isn’t that easy. And if you use e.g. 25 characters, none words, just a randomly or by a password generator created chain of signs finding a password would, I guess, take some years or many more, indeed.

So may be first try this way and after failing starting the brute force method.
I have often seen something saying like this, “if the password is missing just use “RAR Password Cracker” or another cracker”, so I thought, finding a password must be very easy and fast (within a day at least), but it is not like this, obviously.
Many thanks again, best wishes, Biff
