this is whats happening, in the right side you can see computer window, Drive J: is my seagate 500GB external HDD, when I connect it to my computer I get the usb drive detected notification sound, even in safely remove hardware Drive J is showing up but I cant access it as you can see but I am doing chkdsk from cmd in the left window as you can see, its showing something about orphaned files, this means my files are there in the drive and accessible.
I am not getting whats really happening, how do I correct it and get my drive up and working again?? Note: I have tried seagate tools but after 30mins or so there is no disk scan progress, only cmd command seems to be working What is the cause behind this??

Answer #1
Windows 2012 … no matter , what happens if you open up the Drive J:\ ?
timeouts, error messages etc ?
if you run a dir j: from the command line, does it show anything ?
Answer #2
yes I have tried that but the cursor in the cmd window just keeps blinking, nothing happens
now chkdsk is showing this
is this a good sign??

errors in the MFT are not too good …. have a look at this, maybe it helps : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system/master-file-table-mft-issues-on-several-systems/1077fe68-5890-409c-abfc-dea5b2ee4b68

I have been down this road enumerable times. the disk structure is corrupt. how, power surge…..? I have tried so many programs from the most expensive down. result: Kernel for Windows Data Recovery, load your drives in computer manager, determine the disk number, use the program to do an extensive search. it will result in an explorer tree structure which you can recover files, specific, singular files. it will not boot a corrupt operating system but you can usb the hd to an operating(functioning) system and get what you need, by and large.

hard to say, is it? can you access the drive? will computer manager allow you to assign a drive letter?

I used Kernel for Windows Data Recovery and I can see all my files, I even recovered some of my files, mp3s and images, but big files are taking too long to recover, very much slow… my question is what really happened?? how am I being able to access these files with this software but windows cant? you mentioned power surge, that means formatting wont work right? I have to send it to service centre??

, mate, start your own thread.
“my question is what really happened??’ if you could answer that wouldn’t you be the lotto winner! I’ve just had a bunch of hd’s go bad, still spin and can see them but not access fully through windows explorer. I am aware of the limitations of the program I mentioned but seems to be the most advantageous I’ve run across.
edit:”you mentioned power surge, that means formatting wont work right? I have to send it to service centre??” nope, if it still spins there is hope. by that I mean you can take off the side of your case and feel it or use a usb adapter with power cord to attach the drive then pick it up and feel the warmth and wobbly feel. since you said you have retrieved some files then I know it spins/works/on balance a file corruption caused by(satanic forces)? for the cost, if not warrantied, I’d get the files I could then call it a day. if somebody else pays to repair, by all means do that.
formatting: if you can get a drive letter in computer manager then you should be able to format from there, if not try paragon disk manager, not the bootable thing. my experience with drives that have gone south is they are not long for this world. yes I have formatted them with varying degrees of longevity.

well then, to come back to what could have happened :
– power surge (already mentioned)
– “normal” HDD failure with corrupted blocks
– to high temp in the HDD , could be caused by dust, air flow, PC being near a heat source (radiator etc.)
– the disk got a “bump” or a “shake” at some time while lifting , carrying the case
– OS might have stopped in the middle of a write IOPs and crashed
– HDD may have buffer problems
– corrupted chipset which sends fragmented IOPs
as you can see, the list goes on and on, could be any thing , from a “nothing can do” bad HDD or bad power cable / transistor on the MB to … well, anything that can cause a HDD to brake ….
So u can take a pick what it might be, what it really was in the end might be very hard to determine … Sorry
Answer #10
“well then”, that’s rich. “very hard to determine”, hilarious.
Answer #11
yep, there you go , you asked , you got your answer… and I don’t need that bitchy comment from you as you plainly have a quite limited understanding of the matter, otherwise you would not ask such a question like the one you asked and then get all worked up when you get the answer. If you dont like looking for needles in a haystack then don’t go asking for it.
To get even deeper into the hilarious part of your question :

"my question is what really happened??' if you could answer that wouldn't you be the lotto winner! I've just had a bunch of hd's go bad, still spin and can see them but not access fully through windows explorer. I am aware of the limitations of the program I mentioned but seems to be the most advantageous I've run across.

I really would like to win the lottery , but you gave the answer actually yourself … and no, I did not win the lottery.
Thing about it , you give a screenshot , or 2 … and the fact that the HDD is not quite allright … and asked what has caused this to happen ? Do you even understand how hilarious this is, just like calling the garage and wanting them to tell you over the phone why your car is not running , single sentence : car not running, why ? … And then I actually give you a few reasons why this could have happened and you ~ censored ~ bout it like a teen girl that just came t9o the understanding that her boyfriend went out with her best friend … or do you actually assume I can rewind time and space and see what was going on the exact moment the drive(s) developed their faults ? Seriously man ?
If you ask for help and receive it, be thankful and don’t reply with a one-line like you did :

"well then", that's rich. "very hard to determine", hilarious.

or do me the favor and explain the hilarious part to me as I didn’t get it …
EDIT :
Could also be a bad Firmware on the drive(s) , this can also cause data corruption
To determine if this is the case, read out the firmware level and revision of your drive and check with the vendor if there are known problems with this particular rev…

Thats what happens when U tell windows to control external devices.. Mayhem…

thanks for suggesting paragon disk manager, it asked me to restart my pc and while booting it formatted my disk now I can access the disk but as I formatted all my data are gone, but I backed up important files yesterday, only games and tv series are lost. now I can copy files to hdd and access them from there but the copy speed is flactuation, from 2/3mbps to 29mbps
I used partition manager 8 on windows xp VM and used disk checked it showed critical crc error or something like that
luckily I have warranty left until 18th of next month so I am sending it to service centre
thanks everybody for your input
