Disk Problem?

August 2nd, 2016

Hi guys, need an advice over here. Here is the situation :
Today i the middle of copying a file onto my phone, my laptop suddenly hang and non of the keys works. Thus i forced shutdown my laptop(by turn the power off, i think the mistakes is there). Then after reopen, it again stuck at windows logo screen (without the logo coming up). Restart again, is says my startup have problems. I tried to repair by using the recommended setting, but it fails even after 3 attempts.
Next i tried to format the C drive, and the installation is finished without any error. However when it comes to the updating registry it again stop there. Restarted again, and try to enter safe mode. During inspections, it stops at disk, and just hand there.
So, can anyone diagnose my problems please? Thanks in advanced
ps: when i tried to use the hardisk as an external to my pc, it works fine.

Well, it does sound like you’ve got a problem with your HDD but I suppose it could be something else, although very unlikely.
Have you dropped your laptop recently or anything? How long have you had your laptop/hard drive?
The best thing you can do now is to backup the harddrive before anything else! If just plain old Windows get stuck, try Unstoppable Copier. Then once that done, you can download free programs to scan the HDD for faults.
Meanwhile, do you have a spare harddrive that you could try in the laptop?

Thanks for you kind reply.
Well dropped, no, but smacked, yes, hahahaha. By my 2 year old niece, twins. But that was like half a year ago when i let them watch movies at my laptop. Currently i am doing backups on my files, although i could not back `em all since lack of spaces at my pc
I bought my laptop 2 years ago (Asus N53SV). Havent upgraded anything(hardware) since i bought it, so i guess every part is as old as they are.
Well the saddest thing is my spare HD is busted after i let my sister borrowed it last 2 month, so i`m out of HDD to try on my laptop.
By the way, the programs to scan the HD, can you please recommend it? It just that i only have a week before i went back to college so i hope i can fix it before i went back and out of sources.

Well I’ve used these before:
http://hddscan.com/
http://download.cnet.com/CrystalDiskInfo/3000-2086_4-10832082.html

As well as the trial version of another one I can remember now. I just do a search for “hdd scanner” or “hdd health check” or something and grab any. Basically, the best indication is to do a full SMART test and look at the bad sector count, in my opinion anyway. There is a program out there that tries to fix issues on the HDD at hardware level, however if a harddrive needs fixing I wouldn’t want to trust it with my data even if after it was fixed every program claimed that there where no problems. Especially with the price of HDDs nowadays.
It could be that your HDD is only one of your problems by the sounds of your post though. So I’d recommend you try and find another HDD to try in your laptop from somewhere, or at least try running Ubuntu from a USB/Live CD etc.

Oh right, Ubuntu, totally forgot about that. I burn a copy into a dvd last time to have fun with it. Maybe i`ll try it (if i found it in my archive, haha). Well the reason i haven`t replaced my external HD is the cost to buy one, hahaha. Meanwhile the software, i`ll give a shot.Thank you so far

No problem. Keep us updated!
Don’t forget that Ubuntu runs on a USB stick too and I’d have thought your motherboard would support booting from USB. (I’d be surprised if not)

Here some good news. I tried to install windows using my sister`s old HDD and my laptop boot just fine. So just like you said, the problem is on the HD. So now i think i`ll just focused on it. Thanks for earlier.
So during the OS installations, i scan my original hardisk using EaseUS Partition Master (EPM) on my pc (sorry i didn`t use yours after asking for suggestion). During surface test, it found several bad sectors on C drive. Havent scaned my other 2 partitions (D and E). Does it possible if the C drive having bad sectors affecting the other 2 partitions?

I’m not sure I’d count that as good news so much, but I guess it means that you haven’t got to replace the entire laptop. Though, I’d still air on the side of caution and, as always, keep regular backups.
Don’t worry about not using my suggestion though – EaseUS is probably just as good, if not better. As for the partitions, I’m not entirely sure how it works but it’s more than likely the other partitions will have bad sectors too, and if they don’t now it would only be a matter of time before they do! So, in any case, it’s best to ditch the drive once you’ve recovered all the data from it, and I recommend you do that as soon as possible to reduce any data loss.

Haha yea, not to replace the laptop or handing it to the technicians is good enough for me. Who knows how much it`ll cost me later. I already backup only my paperwork, the rest of it not too important which i can continue waiting for the inspection to be done. However EPM`s surface test stopped after 30 minutes running (twice) which i dont know why and it still not even 10% done. Guess i`ll try other some other method if check disk (cmd) and Hd Scan. Thanks for bearing with me.

But if EPM’s surface test stops the chances are your hard drive isn’t even worth testing, but as long as you’re sure you’ve got everything you want from the drive I don’t suppose you have anything to loose by trying to do a complete test. Personally, I’d give up and accept that I have a HDD paper weight, but that’s just me

Hard Disk Sentinel is what I use to check HDD’s
