Computer vibrating because of CPU Cooler

January 22nd, 2020

Hey,
I bought this fan: http://www.scythe-eu.com/produkte/cpu-kuehler/grand-kama-cross.html and a big Antec chassis, which has very high quality.
As I lowered the CPU speed with “speedfan” the fan of the cooler runs very quiet and very slow (around 800pwm idle I think).
But the cooler, as its so huge and strangely build, start rumbling/vibrating after some time.. like “tatatatatatatata” and when I looked into my computer (from the DVD thing in the front) I saw that the huge cooler shaked like crazy.
So I figured out, that I have to open the chassis a bit (the left side), so the shaking from the fan can “evade” out of the whole chassis construction.
Does somebody know what I can do, to let the vibration from the CPU cooler evade out of the computer chassis, without opening it a little bit? I thought of stabilizing the cooler more, but then I dont really know how…

TL;DR: Cooler to big -> vibrates -> opening computer chassis helps, but do you know a better way?

Answer #1
Sounds like it wasn’t clipped down properlyQ
Either that or the fan is off balance or something is touching the fan blades..
Answer #2
That or the bearing is going out. When my fan hits 2,000 RPM’s it starts vibrating bad too, and mine is only 1 year old!
All I can say is don’t go cheap on a fan, I got a Hyper 212 EVO =(

Good point..
How to test: find something with a point (but not too sharp) – a ball point pen works well (not a fibre or gel one, just your basic “kilometrico” bic cheapy.
Put it as close to the centre of the fan as possible and pus in against the spring, gently. If the fan stops the noise and “fly true” then it’s likely bearing.
If the heatsink itself actually wobbles and looks loose then it’s not fitted correctly.
While your there, check for dust bunnies and wires on the fan blade.
If it is new, write to them as ask for a replacement. Antec is a good brand, they will want to replace it to keep a good name.
