Can someone explain FTPs to me?

So he doesn’t have a Rapidshare account, and doesn’t want to buy one because he mainly only downloads movies and music. Would it be possible for me to download the stuff from RS.com, and then have him be able to access them from my computer via FTP? If it’s possible and someone could give a pretty detailed how to guide, I’d very much appreciate it.

The short answer is no….even if you own a premium account it’s useless using ftp client…You might as well just use a download manager…rapidshare and ftp are mostly used for remote uploading…

I’m not sure you understand what I want to do.
I use a download manager to download files from RS.com to my computer.
He wants to download files from my computer to his computer.

If I understand correctly you wish to a download via your RS account on to your PC b then set up an FTP server for youe friend to transfer the files to his/her PC of course you can a simpler way would use a site say Adrive who give 50 Gig of storeage for free set up an account and share the password with your friend you upload he/she downloads only questio is file size as 2 Gig max per file on Adrive

FTP is very simple, just get a program that allows you to set up an FTP server like Serv-U Ftp. Follow the instructions, basically you just create a folder and set it as your server folder. Serv-U will give you the IP address (you can also make an alias address if you want) and you can apply all kinds of security / restrictions too numerous to mention here. All your freind needs is a program that can access ftp sites, like FlashFXP (one of the best). He will have to learn how to use it, but basically he will log in your FTP site info, passwords, etc. and if everythigis set up right he can just get to downloading anything in the folder you specify. It’s easier done than said. Just get the software and start fiddling around with it and you’ll see what I mean. Good luck.

By the way , watch out for the dynamic IP when u set up a FTP server in your PC cuz every time you change the IP , you have to configure your server again. So try www.no-ip.com . Register in that site to have a static IP.

I looked at that its on forumBB and very good simple to use just set up shared folder on it (on your pc ) and send the link and pass word to whoever you wish to download

I was able to set it up with Serv-U, however the download speeds for him are extremely slow (80KB/s, which is my max upload speed)…is there any way to speed this up, or is he stuck downloading at my max upload speed?

Your max up as set by isp will be the max down Thats life and one reason why I like online store at least its fast (ish ) down
