Blood under my toenail..

February 4th, 2020

Hi, So 3 weeks ago I was playing football and then suddenly I felt pain in my toe. After I went home I looked at it and there was nothing. Couple of days later I notice this purple stain under my toenail, I knew it was blood. I read about it in google, most articles advise to wait and do nothing, it will heal by itself, but the articles also said it will take from 5 months to year till it fully heal. Is there a faster way??? I also read about the paper clipper method and wanted to ask if someone has done it?? (what it basically says is that to make a hole in the nail and then the blood will dry out.. What do you think?) Thanks,

you do realize we’re a forum? right?
go see your doctor, there’s nothing we can do.

It surprises me it would take that long. Isn’t it in general similar to a bruise? The paper clipper method? I would advice against doing it yourself though. Too much risk for infection. If it could be considered similar similar to a bruise, you could always massage your toe or put hot compresses on it from the moment you’re sure it isn’t bleeding anymore. That way you help your body get rid of it a bit faster. Other than that, try to avoid stressing that toe for a while. Thank you for visiting Doctor Sneek, that’ll be 50 bucks…

uahuhahua i loved this topic , i was playing football amateur and it happened to me many times. i need to see it before making any comments but it either heals through a very long time like months , depending on the stain’s location. if it is at the bottom it may take longer than that , since nails at the feet grows very slowly , basicly that stain get to the top and needs to be cut , it is same as any white dots on nails happens due to lack of vitamin.
and second thing can happen , if the damage is serious , the nail itself totally kicked out by body’s immune system and new nail grows from the zero. in any case it isnt a serious thing , let it stays at there and dont check if it is at there everyday

so its some blood where the nail has come apart from the toe bed, which will remain until it grows out and can take some time.
>In a bad case, the nail is lifted from the toe bed and the complete nail is separated from the toe bed and it falls off in time…so a toe without nail.
Not so bad, I’ve had it on both the finger and toe, it grows back…but does take time

holy ~love~, do not do anything with it. you have a subcutaneous hematoma and if you poke it it will get infected and you may lose your toe.
LEAVE IT ALONE
Answer #6
it will get infected and you may lose your toe.
It’s highly unlikely that the body will infect itself, even in a remote case of autoimmunity of the toe with drugs it can be cured. It’s far more likely to be hit by a thunderbolt than to lose the toe in this way.
Edit: the first part of the post disappeared…
I meant that if you leave it alone it wouldn’t infect itself. Let the body do its healing. You don’t have to worry about time because if you leave it alone it won’t do any harm. There is the possibility that your nail will fall but with a little patience everything will be back to normal.

They make a tool for drilling into the nail, looks like a jewelers screwdriver with a drill point, I have one… But it can be done this way too.

I will take a picture of it when I can. In the mean time, thanks guys

I had blood under my toe nail too from the hard boots and walking long distances. The whole nail turned red and purplish like you said. A few weeks or after a month the nail fell off. now my toe nail is growing back..It will take a long time to heal and the blood will cause the nail to drop. Going to the doctor will probably make it heal faster as they will drain the blood.

????????
If you poke a hole in it, it WILL get infected. Bacteria from the outside.

The paperclip method is pretty effective you’ve had a traumatic injury to your toe or finger. I’ve had it done when a finger got crushed and had the throbbing pain. Heat a bent paperclip to red hot and use it to poke and melt a hole in the middle of the nail so blood spurts out and the pressure is released.
Won’t help in your case because it’s most likely that the blood has already coagulated, much like when you stub your toe and not like when you drop a piano on it. Two different types of injuries with the same result. A blackened nail, or a blackened nail with a hole in it from a paperclip, that takes months to grow out.

I’d leave it, let your body naturally heal the wounds, takes time but can be done. The doctors will probably say the same.
Answer #13
Unless you are feeling a lot of pain from it (a pressure spot), then don’t do the piercing thing.
It’s risky, can lead to infection (even if you sterilise the needle, it’s still an open hole).
Advise:
Leave it alone, it will be reabsorbed in about 2-3 months, maybe longer if it a big blood-blister.

Use that paper clip, you will get infected, now go see the doctor finally!!!!!
