The Best OS is Window 7 or Window XP
But if you want your OS look stylish then i suggest MAC and LINUX.

I don’t think there is a “best” for this one, No OS will run well with only 128MB of ram, You should really
upgrade it, Or buy a brand new laptop even, It’s old enough.

Windows XP Performance Edition

Any laptops that I build / fix with low stats like that, usually run Linux or Windows 98SE. I like Windows 98SE because it’s just so… screwed up and fun to toy with.

What do you think they did back in the days of 64mb, 32mb and less, its not that nothing will run on it (assuming the hardware’s fine), if i were to get a computer that originally came with dos on it, the best os for that is dos.
he either needs an extremely optimised os (tinyxp or maybe some form of linux) or an older one (win98SE, win95, etc).

I’d suggest giving GNU/Linux a go, something like Lubuntu for starters. It’s a flavor of Ubuntu (GNU/Linux) with LXDE and I’ve tested it on a PC with 128MB of RAM and a P4 3.0GHz CPU in order to resurrect it and it worked smooth enough.

Puppy.
Answer #18
How about Osx86?

Acer Travelmate 250
P4 2.6ghz without SSE3, 855MG
Installation Method:
used 10.4.4 "Generic Install Disk" without installing 10.4.5 patch
Working:
Video works with Quartz Extreme
LAN works fine (how can u put this working?)
Sound works now (did not work in 10.4.1)
Brightness control keys work.
Not Working:
Wireless does not work at all
Battery Information does not work whereas it did work in 10.4.1

I don’t need to think, I already know as I was there, But I wouldn’t recommend Win9X to anyone as it’s way too outdated. Anyways, I see now that I could’ve put it better, Let me rephrase, While there are OS’s that could run okay with only 128MB of ram, One has to remember the OS is only the base of operations where he runs other apps from. The OS will use at least 40% of those 128 megs if not more, Leaving at least 76.8MB available if not less, You can’t do much with that these days. The OP will not be able to run many apps at once or even have multiple browser tabs open with that, Also, Flash player (needed for youtube and such) takes a lot of ram too when you watch a video, The pagefile (virtual memory) on the HDD will be automatically used once the physical ram is maxed out, Making performance even worse!
Bottom line is, From a performance standpoint, Running a computer with only 128MB of ram these days is highly unrecommended.

I installed Tiny XP rev09 and it is running fine.I can watch videos on VLC,Chrome runs fine but when i run a video the other tabs slow down so i close them. Also multitasking is impossible.Overall it runs fine and is good for me.If it slows down too much I will put Ubuntu.
Thanks for suggestions
Answer #22
^^^Rather than ubuntu, use Puppy Linux or damsmall linux as several people have said above, otherwise you will get similar issues.
