Backing up a drive
August 4th, 2016
I want to be able to just take a snapshot of it…burn it to DVD and store it in case I need to reinstall it again.
suggestions?
Don’t know if it’s the best… but Norton Ghost is pretty good.
Yeah ghost 2003 is pretty good but you need to have xp…not sure of the new one that supports vista. One thing about backups is some computer work really well with certain apps and some don’t. Start out with ghost and if that works always use ghost. if not the move to acronis true image. I can always get either one to work. You shouldn’t have to choose any other app these 2 are the best.
Acronis True Image is the absolute best.
I would go for Norton Ghost, I used it for years. I only recently found version 11.0 for DOS (so i can run it from USB, boot up my pc and bam!-image done, real quick!) in a Symantec Solution Suite. Search for that and you’ll find the latest Norton Ghost for DOS in it which I think supports Vista.
I didn’t even know Norton Ghost for DOS was limited to OSes, I assumed it only read harddrives boot sectors, and so on.
Windows has a backup tool.
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup
It should start a backup wizard to guide you through the process.
This will backup the files/folders you specify.
If you want to do a complete copy of the whole PC for quick restore in the event of a system failure then you should look for some drive imaging software like Norton Ghost.

Thank you all for your help.
I went and tried both Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image.
I found Acronis True Image to be the easiest and more intuitive of the two.
I recommend it.
