AVI Player For Linux
January 1st, 2024
try mplayer or SMplayer (gui frontend of mplayer) here
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/downloads.php
VLC does work in Linux.
if you are a ubuntu user then run this in Terminal to install the missing codecs and other extra stuff
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Could anyone recommend a good program that one could use to view AVIs on a Linux system? I am new to the system and not sure if it's me or if VLC won't work on Linux! Thank you in advance!
There is a plugin that allows VLC player to run ontop of firefox. Thats what i use for my ubuntu 9.04. you can get it on firefox addon’s website. Try it out. If that doesn’t work, the standard video player that comes with ubuntu plays AVI files just fine. You might need a update or two, but it should work just fine.
edit: I’m runing 9.04 on my hp mini 311 netbook, and it runs like a charm. Just getting the sound to work properly was difficult, i had to google alsa update and had to compile and install the drivers myself, which was in some odd geeky way, very fun I was gonna use 9.10 but it didn’t see the broadcom wirelss card, so it posed a very big problem. 9.04 is working fine with complied sound drivers, wireless worked right off the bat, and the ION graphics card with it’s drivers are working properly. It runs very smooth. Also getting the restricted extras is very important later on down the road. it’s really worth apt-getting
VLC
Many thanks everyone! I appreciate all the suggestions and will try them all!
VLC works very well on Linux. Give VLC a shot.
