Need of SD card in softmod Wii

i just softmodded my Wii and therefore an SD card was needed. But I was wondering, does the softmod require a constant presence of the card?
Because I just played game without the card and it worked just fine… But a friend of mine says it’s needed.
Can anyone give me a straight answer?

He may use some kind of boot loader that’s on the SD card.
