Couple questions about Sorround Sound

September 27th, 2013

Hi,
I have a creative 5.1 sound system and creative 7.1 VI sound card. My problem is i cant get any sound from the back speakers while listening to music on itunes or watching movies on gom player etc.
But when i open speaker setup from control panel and try to see if all the speakers work, they all work when i click on them.
I hope you could understand my problem and help me, thanks for your time.

Answer #1
Unless you are using the creative virtual 3d things, your music or movie has to actually HAVE 5.1 or 7.1 sound in it.
Stereo doesn’t magically become 5.1, even the creative bits only fake the extra sound channels.
The tests work because the creative speaker tests ARE 5.1 sounds.
Answer #2
yeah make sure the movie has 5.1. IF it does then check the settings on the player or even the audio decoder as that may override the players settings.
But as the above person says. Music isnt 5.1 so it wont play out of all speakers by default. However if you google around for info on your driver or look in your speakers manual there should be a way to change it so music plays out of all speakers. However you will most likely have to keep changing this setting back and forth each time you want to listen to music/watch a movie
Answer #3
It’s in the driver, called creative CSSS. there’s two setting, for different separations of sound.
Answer #4
There will be an option in the card, call Speaker Fill
Music is only 2.1 is sound, hence it will not play in more than two speakers.
I have onboard audio, so idk abt your sound card.
Look in the bundled software, there should be an option.

I believe you mean CMSS, which will enable 3D surround (adjust the stereo envelopment).

Incorrect, stereo as Fluffbutt has pointed out is 2.1, you can get music cd’s that are DTS 5.1. (2.1 is infact 3 speakers)
@knorrrrr – you don’t say which specific soundcard or surround sound setup you are using, if you were more specific then perhaps other settings can be suggested, they vary between the different Creative setups, and the version of EAX/THX console you are using to get the best effect.
Answer #6
Yup – CMSS, sorry, Creative media surround sound..
You can get audio files that are 5.1, there are ac3 files and even some wave (wav) files can be 5.1.
They (the wav files) are rare, the ac3 are common, but most people don’t know about them.
Yes, you can get 5.1 discs, I think they are music dvd though, 5.1 sound is quite big.
Stereo is only 2.0, not 2.1 – 2.1 is stereo with subwoofer (yes, three speakers..)
At a guess he’s trying to play normal mp3 2.0 and possibly downloaded movies (which are usually 2.0 if they are under 1 Gig). these will play as 5.1 if CMSS (thanks!) is turned on in the Creative Tools section (creative properties??).

Wow, 5.1 music, first time I have heard such a thing.
Would be awesome, never seen a download of that in my life, maybe i have to look harder.

Might have mixed up 2.1 and 2.0 there,
tell me if music is 2.0. where do we get bass for the woofer, the computer handles that or the in built amp from the computer speaker / a/v receiver ?
Not really clear on that myself

I’ve got quite a few music cd’s with DTS 5.1, some are classed as DVD Audio discs. You can pick them up cheap on E-bay, or when libraries are selling their old stock. (I think they have been out for about 8 or 9 years). They are awesome to listen to on a decent sound system.

have some ac3 5.1 (and some wav 5.1 too) samples.
Stereo systems with woofies (like logitech 2.1 set-up) all have built-in automatic ‘splitting’ – they send frequencies below about 120 Hz to the woofy, the rest to left or right as normal (the 120 sent to the woofy is left and tight mixed together).
Sometimes it’s in the sound card drivers, some medium quality and up speaker offer them.
I used to have a lovely set of Logitech 5.1’s that had a “matrix mixer” system. It usually did a very good job of turning 2.0 into ‘fake’ 5.1. you could actually hear different sounds from the rear speakers to the fronts.
