I think you only need the right codecs for your PC to be able to play .mkv files…simply download these codecs and install:
http://www.cccp-project.net/download.php?type=cccp
Windows media player should be able to play .mkv files after that,but i’d recommend using the VLC player,it’s free and better than wmp in some ways:
