Thinking of using my TV as a monitor.
January 29th, 2020
cheers, guys.
if your graphics card has to outputs and has a high enough resolution why not
So it would look good playing AVIs and stuff?
I’ve been using both my 27 and 50 inch as monitors. i upgraded to a really nice graphics card for my desktop. i’m thinking about canceling my cable tv

So, when ur watching AVIs and stuff through the PC using the TV monitor it looks good?
Hayden, it really depends on the quality (resolution) of your movie.
And none of it is possible if you don’t have a good enough graphics card.
Bear in mind VGA only carries video and not audio, you may have to address that for movie watching
Well, i’ve got a Quadro FX 1700 video card. I’m hoping that will be alright? How would I do the audio then, you think? I do have a surround sound system. Can I hook that up somehow?
I am using Sony Bravia 26inch as monitor lol!
My TV is a LG 32 inch. I think its that size anyway, and a Quadro FX 1700 card. Should that be alright?

Yes, that looks like an excellent card for the job!

If you TV has HDMI input (which it should have) ,then connect it with a DVI-HDMI cable(or use a HDMI-HDMI cable with a DVI adapter dongle)..
A surround speaker system you can just plug into your sound card….either using the normal speaker outputs or a digital sound out if your PC and sound system both have one..

Awesome. I think the response time on my TV is something like 8ms. Would that be alright for running my PC on? Its fine enough for the 360 and movies, but I wonder if its different for PC.
cheers.
That’s fine..
ALright awesome. One last question I can think of: If I use it all like I’m planning, is it dangerous to my TV in any way? I don’t plan to use it aas a monitor all the time, but I’ll use it a lot for watching movies and tv rips, etc.
It is not too dangerous but however, your TV might be damaged from moving it from one place to another and by plugging and unplugging the cable unpolitely.
As about the quality, I agre with , it totally depends on the quality of the video/movie.
Use HDMI cable
It’s better.
Alright. In regards tot sound. I’ve got a 5.1 Logitech speaker set that came with the PC. It doesn’t have an amp. It does do Optical, however, it doesn’t have an amp. Its just a subwoofer, which has the speakers plug into, and from there they plug into the PC. Now, is there any way I can use this system for sound with both the TV if I’m using the pC on it and the 360?
cheers.
most likely your tv’s VGA input is limited to a resolution of 1366×768.
use DVI to HDMI for 1080i, download some Blu-Ray and HDTV rips and enjoy!
if you own a 360 or PS3 just network that to ur PC then use PS3 media server, works awesome for tvrips and dvdrips. but BRrips are a bit to extreme for this type of set up, unless you have a kick@$$ processor.
Yeah, I know it’ll work well for watching MKVs and stuff on the big screen, but what about the sound setup I described?

Google… ‘optical digital audio switch box’
Here’s an example..

It doesn’t bother me if I have to get up and keep switching the optical from the 360 to the PC. I’m just wanting to know if my current setup allows me to have sound when running the PC through my TV?
your pc will send sound to what ever device is plugged into the main speaker port in the back. Now depending on you PC/case you may have more than one speaker port so you can have two different devices hooked up and just pick which you want sound to come out of in windows. the way I use mine is I have a cable that plugs into a headphone jack on one side and a left/right connector on the other end.
as for using the TV as a monitor, I don’t recommend it. I have never seen a TV that works well as a monitor. movies should work fine on it but the desktop and such will probably look like crap.
Anyway. I was thinking I could watch DVD rips and TV rips on my TV through my PC. Would it look good, or would the rez or display not be ideal? The TV is 1080i by the way.
If thats the main thing you want than the media server thing is your easiest solution, video looks great(depending on file) and sound works fine.
I have a 32″ 1080i TV and watch mass movies this way but I use a PS3.
I’ve got a 360 but I don’t really want to stream using that. i’d rather just play through the PC for MKVs and stuff.
