XP BSOD IRQL Not Less Or Equal

August 7th, 2016

One day my sister opened up her computer and it was unable to start normally. We recieved a blue screen saying DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL. It is able to start in safe mode.
I did some googling and some people said it was bad memory. I switched out the memory with sticks I knew worked. Still got the same blue screen.
Some said it was the graphics card drivers. I uninstalled the driver and rebooted. It was able to start normally but when we tried to put it to a higher resolution, again crashed with the same blue screen. Nvidia hasn’t updated that graphics card driver at all but we went to HP and the driver is old.
My sister was using it in low res normal mode for a while to try to get some of her files off and now we’re back to square one with it not even starting in normal mode. Blue screen.
Someone else said it could be the CPU overheating? I’m not sure how accurate that is but the fan is constantly on and it is extremely hot. My dad did try disassembling it to get to the CPU but since it is a laptop the whole thing will have to be COMPLETELY torn apart and we are not willing to do this until we know its not a problem that can be fixed.
Need specs? I’ll get them ASAP.

Answer #1
It can be very many things. Have you reinstalled windows?
Answer #2
No, I told my dad we should but my sister has way too many things on her computer to reinstall right now. I’m going to have her get her stuff off just in case we have to do it.
Answer #3
have you tried the last config that worked option on boot screen
Answer #4
No, I have not. I will add that to the list of things to try. I don’t want to do anything without my dad being here because it’s not my computer but I’ll take all ideas.
