May 11th, 2018

Hi everyone,
this is basicly the deal im moving, so i decied to format my computer and make 2 partitions: 1 windows (also experimenting with which version), and one linux, problem is i dont have also of experience in the newer versions of linux (i tried knoppix a bit and it was cute but i want something i can install and use regualry as my OS), and i have no idea what to pick… Im a student so im pretty basic usage Gaming and net surfing mostly, and of course typing, lots of typing!
nothing too major…
But i would like something that will be able to run games ment for windows without some crazy over-the-top app that will be way too heavy..
I heard alot of good things about redhat and Debian but nothing in particular…
So basicly here is what im lookin for:
1.Good lookin well designed and easy to use
2.Good Apps for general usage
3.Rock solid, stable platfom
4.Able to run current games ment for windows
if anyone has any ideas i would love to hear them.
P.S. Please write, if possible, why you recommended that type of version

1.) No linux verison run “current games ment for windows” due to the fact that linux can not run .exe files.
2.) s/version/distro
3.) try Linux Ubuntu because you have no idea what your doing. Ubuntu is very user-friendly.

Yeah man, go with ubuntu, i had no experience with Linux at all but i wanted a change from Windows, so i decided to go with Ubuntu. Took me a day or so to get it perfect, had to reinstall it maybe 4 times before i realized what i was doing that fricked it up. By the way, if you go with Ubuntu, make sure you start the proprietary video card driver BEFORE you install the recommended system updates or it glitches out.

Download the ISO from the website and burn it to CD, it’s Live. Make sure it runs on your machine. You can do that with most distros. You can easily dual-boot it too. Ubuntu is the way to go IMHO

anynody know of a reasonably gd linux for a pc with 128mb of ram cos i got an old pc that has windows ME and its crap
Answer #6
I say go with ubuntu, its the most user orientated. And The correct term for “versions” is distros, the more you know : -).
You can get your games to run with almost no overhead using wine, check the things you want to run here http://appdb.winehq.org/ some things work on it, some don’t (without alot of messing around at least).
Once you get ubuntu, make sure you check this http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper to get the most out of it.
Might wanna get this too  http://www.playonlinux.com/en
Good luck.

If you just want a PC with Terminal Console, then you can go for an openSuSE 10.3 Linux Installation.

openSuSE 10.3 is the best IMHO
It has even got the ability to initiate installation within Windows OS by using instlux command.
This modifies the GRUB (Boot Loader in Linux) to automatically add the Windows OS to its menu.lst file thereby making it easy for Novices to Linux and regarding Application compatibility too it is good IMHO.

I used to recommend ubuntu for people wanting to give Linux a go but sadly they kept going back to Windows. Then I found PClinuxOS which in my opinion is more user friendly than ubuntu due to the fact that its plays any media out-of-the-box and the installation is really straight forward.
Also I would recommended that you try different distributions (Live-CD) first before you could commit to hard drive installation and see which one you feel more comfortable with also try the differents Desktop Enviroments like Gnome or KDE (there are others but these are the most widely used).
List of user-friendly Distros
PCLinuxOS

Mandriva

ubuntu or Kubuntu

http://www.ubuntu.com/
OpenSuse

To run some windows apps and Games you can use WINE as has pointed out. CEDEGA is also an alternative to running Windows games on Linux but it’s proprietary software which works on a subscription basis.
Also you could install VMWARE workstation or server and install windows ona virtual machine.
