[SOLVED]fourwheeler quad atv repair

December 11th, 2021

hi im trying to rack up a solution for my rear axle and hubs they have been welded before and i would like to return the bars to near usable condition in order to bolt on a hub. (i have new hubs but can not find nor do i want to pay for a new assembly)
my tap and die set is too little and im aware i can grind it but that would probly take some time if i dont want to burn up my angle grinder so is there anything im not thinking of?
thanks and i will go get some nice pictures right NAIOW
i also know that i will have to shorten the length most likely leading to chewing through barrings
~EDIT~ this is what it should look like i borrowed the image from google.
mine looks identical except the ends have no groves or threads at the tip

Answer #1
you should throw it out, once heat has been applied to the axles, they are ruined. they are heat treated, heat ruins the heat treating process, making them soft, even warping them. they CAN be fixed properly by an axle shop, BUT the cost would be much more than finding a used axle in good shape. trying to fix this yourself can get you killed. imaging going say 40MPH, and having a wheel fall off!. most likely the ATV would flip over.
Answer #2
fixed it, ground down the end of the axle and put a keyway in it then i used some wheel spacers to give it the correct width. welded a nut on the end to hold it from falling off and it runs like new
