Is there a way to connect a computer to my own local network, but prevent internet access? I just want to link it to a WiFi controller, but prevent internet as its my DAW.
Cheers!

Answer #1
Could try setting up a static IP in the local network without placing in Default gateway address.
It will be able to work on same lan, but will not use the router.(router is the way to internet)
Answer #2
Usually it’s possible. We need the router model to proceed further. Another good additional information would be knowing your experience with routers and related. Are you able to configure a router(port forwarding, what is a subnet etc. etc.) or you need a very detailed step by step guide?

Everything I have goes through a switch and into the wireless router which is a TP Link C8. I know my way around the admin panel and although I may not use all the features, I’m fairly certain I know what they’re all for. I’ve had to do some port forwarding for other things and yes I know what a subnet is. Idid a google search for this, but it’s all people trying to prevent this from happening

You are lucky because TP-Link has a quick way to do it:
http://www.tp-link.com/en/faq-359.html
Maybe the procedure will be a little different on your specific model but you are doing this:
-Create a rule in access control for the PC that can access the Internet and allow every type of traffic
-Deny any Internet traffic for all the other devices
If your router doesn’t have this feature then we can try using a DMZ or a VLAN, but I doubt that the VLAN approach might be the best route on a home router…
There are also various ugly solutions to your question but I prefer to leave them as a last resort.

ok, Thanks I’ll give it a try tomorrow morning

‘s option does seem the best option, but another easy way around it would be to change the dns to one that doesnt work.. Heres an example how..
Example: Changing DNS server settings on Windows 7
Go to the Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. …
Select the Networking tab. …
Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. …
Click OK.
This way will prevent internet access unless you use specific IP addresses to connect to web sites. So games will be able to connect to there servers, but say if a family member comes and trys to browse the net, they wont be able to.. I am unsure what a DAW is of the top of my head, so my suggestion may or may not be relevant..
Answer #7
A DAW is a Digital Audio Workstation, basically a computer used for recording and producing music. That’s actually not a bad idea though, I’m gonna see if that will work on my mac. Cheers!
Answer #8
making a computer to not resolve DNS doesn’t make it unable to connect to the internet via protocols or other ways.
the only way without a policy on a firewall to deny traffic out/in of it, is to not set a default gateway, as i stated on the first post.
having no default gateway means it can’t “talk” with other networks except the one he is already in.
for example if your DAW is at 172.16.5.100 and your network is 172.16.5.0 (with subnet 255.255.255.0) it will only be able to communicate with 172.16.5.1-254 devices.
having a Default gateway will result as follow – if he cannot find or communicate with a computer then he asks the router(default gateway) to talk for him. as we all do with Internet, can also solve dns records for us if configured.

ah ok, that makes sense. Thanks!
