Graphics card error

February 25th, 2014

I just installed a new graphics card Sapphire HD 5670 512mb GDDR5. When I start up my computer it just gives me 10 beeps.
Motherboard is pretty old Abit IL9 pro.
Any idea what could be the problem ?

Answer #1
Sounds like a bad graphics card. I assume it boots fine with the GPU out?
When you say new, do you mean you purchased it new, or its new to you?
Answer #2
Yes, it’s new just bought it. And it boots fine with my old card.

Probably a silly question, but you do have the GPU power cable hooked up right?
Answer #4
It doesn’t have a power cable, it should get all the power from the PCI-E.
Answer #5
Yep,The 5670 does not require additional power.
Seems that you got your card DOA,Have it replaced.

Oh gosh, your right, I just realized it was a 5670, that makes it a very silly question.
Well, other than the fact that you might have not seated the GPU in very well, its probably a bad GPU and you will need to RMA it.
On that thought, what exactly did you buy the graphics card for? A 5670 is not very powerful. You should really try to get at least a 5750 or 6750.

Okay thanks for the help. What is weird is that the GPU fan is working. My motherboard is pretty old, so I was wondering could this be the problem.
Answer #8
covalz replied: What is weird is that the GPU fan is working.
Fan turns on as soon as it gets power, not related to the GPU working or not.

Supports PCI-Ex16, should not be a problem.
EDIT: You should really try to get a better GPU than the one you purchased. If your on a budget, I bought my last 2 GPU’s used off Craigslist and am very pleased with the results. You can refer to this chart to help you decide.

Thanks for the suggestion, but honestly I don’t need anything fancy.
So I sent an email to the store, they said that ATI cards may not work with older motherboards, could this be the case ? My motherboard is Abit il9 pro.
Answer #10
Of course it is possible it just won’t work on that motherboard. Unless you can try the card on another motherboard, ther is no way to tell for sure.
Answer #11
Okay so I tried something and I kind of got the card working.
I have another PCI-E slot on my motherboard and it works on this one. Problem is that I think this slot is slower, because it says on the manual that one of the PCI-E X16 Has just 4X Bandwidth.
So could it be I’m losing performance. And how is this even possible that it ain’t working on the other slot if all of my other graphic cards are.
Answer #12
covalz replied: So could it be I'm losing performance.
Yes, it sounds like you are using the x4 slot and not the x16.
covalz replied: And how is this even possible that it ain't working on the other slot if all of my other graphic cards are.
Squirrelman replied: Of course it is possible it just won't work on that motherboard.

So I assume X16 slot is broken somehow, but then why are other cards working ?
It actually says on the manual that it’s X16(X4 Bandwidth) I don’t know how this makes sense.

Probably not broken if it works with the other cards, just incompatible with your video card.
covalz replied: It actually says on the manual that it's X16(X4 Bandwidth) I don't know how this makes sense.
Its an X16 slot, just X4 bandwidth. Means it can support X1 and X4 devices. Video cards require an X16 bandwidth slot.
Answer #15
have you updated the BIOS to the latest

Video cards require an X16 bandwidth slot.
not true
supposedly they perform best in a 16x slot but they don’t “require” it (ie: he’s running his in a 4x slot)
a top line card’s performance may be affected by the lack of a 16x slot but most mid and low range cards perform nearly the same on 4x or 16x as they require less bandwidth (5670 is a low to mid-range card)
Answer #16
Haven’t updated BIOS yet, but it’s rather unlikely it will help, because none of the changelogs of BIOS updates state anything about PCI-E slot.
After some Google’ing I found out that many people with same motherboard face that problem, and they’re forced to use X4 slot. So I guess I’ll stick with this for now.
Thanks for the help.
Answer #17
you will be fine in the second slot with no performance loss whatsoever.
