My question is how do I start customizing my website?

My question is how do I start customizing my website?
Edit: just want to know how to customize the layout of the website. I have the html files, but I don’t know where to place them. I have drupal 6 running with webmin, but I dont’ have a clue where to put the files to make them work even with FTP. I was thinking it was var/html/www but not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
