Outlook Will Not Allow Configuration

November 18th, 2013

One of our users tried to configure Outlook on her PC by herself. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know much about configuring Outlook and selected the “Outlook with MS Exchange” option when the Wizard asked how you’d like to configure your email account. Of course we have no Exchange server so now it keeps trying to find the Exchange server and times out. Every time I start Outlook, it is automatically trying to configure Exchange server. After this step, Outlook will not go any further and halts and gives me this message:
“the connection to ms exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online…blah, blah, blah..”
When I click on the only option, OK, I get another pop up window, “cannot open your default email folders. The file C:\Users\…\outlook.ost is not an offline folder file”
We have no Exchange server and I need to configure her account as a POP3 account. How can I make Outlook to stop configuring Exchange settings and go to the “Internet Mail/POP3” option? Any ideas?

Answer #1
By creating a new Account nd deleting the older one.
Answer #2
unfortunately, I can’t get to that point where you delete the old account and create a new one. Like I said, as soon as I open Outlook, it immediately tries to search for the Exchange server and then times out; even in safe mode.
Answer #3
Instead of using Outlook directly, (i.e using Tools > Accounts) go to the Windows control panel, and then to the “Mail” icon.
Should be able to do everything you need to from there.
Hope this helps.
Answer #4
Worked from the Control Panel, Mail profile…thanks for the help.
