What do I have to do to set up a new cable modem?

login to your modem when its pluged into your pc and go to status and your mac should be there.
The renting of the cable modem is 5 bucks a month because it is a wireless correct? You could just downgrade to a normal modem and then purchase a wireless router. You could also purchase a modem and use yours instead of theirs. All you have to do is return your modem, then call comcast support number and give them the new mac address that is on the modem. It is usually label on the modem as well. Usually with a white piece of paper on a linksys modem. I’d probably just use your cable companies modem and your own wireless router. It easier for the cable company to talk to their modem than it is to talk to one that you purchased.

This, it sounds stupid but nearly all modems will come with instructions that are two things; a) easy to follow and b) work. If problems do arise, then come and ask for help – but I doubt they will.
Good luck buddy
just did what you are talking about
the “MAC address” is right on the back of the modem
jot it down then just set the modem up the same as the one you’re renting then call comca$t support and the tech will ask for the new MAC address and set you up
I always call late at nite (11pm-2am) to bypass the layers and waiting time
then return your rented modem
stick with motorola if you can (cisco modem had problems where I am)
