Hi anyone know of a good fast video converter that can do avi to dvd etc but will work well on
a bog standard laptop running windows 7 64 bit.

Well, The most popular converter is probably Convertxtodvd.
But to be honest, When it comes to video conversion, The speed is mostly determined
by the hardware and not the app used! You’d be best just buying an HD Media Player and use it
along with a flash drive or an external HDD (Would save you a lot of time – No need for conversions of any kind!)

Most newer DVD players will play AVI as is..
But if you must convert, then ConvertxtoDVD is good..

I think the best solution is by . The media boxes are quite cheap and you need to think of all the tons of hours saved on conversions not to mention wear and tear on the computer and associated extras. I speak to you from long and bitter personal experience.
