Problem With FireFox and Windows XP Freezing
January 21st, 2020
Basically I’ve had Windows XP on my pc for about a year, then lately I installed Win7 and Linux as Dual Boot, they both are fine, FireFox is fine on them. But on the XP as soon as it boots the Fan comes on, both fans they never come on, normally you can hear the Hard Drives spinning lol. Anyways they come on and it’s constantly processing stuff, although the Ram is 25% used and CPU is 2 at idle (What the hell?)
Also when you open FireFox, Once it finally opens it freeze for about 10mins, then once it unfreezes it’s fine, fast as normal… What’s going on? Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Spybot and Uniblue all say there’s no Viruses on the XP install but why would it be behaving like this? If you open Control Panel it goes into spazz mode again and fans get faster, if you open the Computer it’s mega hot inside, but if you’re in Linux or Win7, no fans are on and it’s room temp inside the Computer. So what ya think guys? Edit: Oh yeh and FireFox on my Win7 Laptop is starting to freeze on first opening it now, it never used to. Maybe it is a Virus? Thanks.
It sounds like something like a process or service is competing for resources with FF based on the freezing issues. Did you run HijackThis and post the log on their site to check if there’s anything running that shouldn’t be? Also, did you run those anti-spyware programs in Safe Mode? Also, go into msconfig and check the Startup tab to see what loading. Then check the Services tab and put a check in the box that says “Hide All Microsoft Services” and see what’s left.
It could be the dual boot is to blam and hogging up your system making FF freeze. Try another browser and see if it happens again.
Good luck.
Thanks, I’ll do the msconfig thing, I normally use that to stop all them annoying programs that start up when Windows starts Such as WLM Etc… But I’ll do what you said. And it was being slow before I duel booted, I just thought it needed a clean up lol.
Have you added any new addons to Firefox recently? If so, try disabling them one at a time and see if you can find the offending one!

I thought that, I got rid of them all, same problem so I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it but same problem, this is for 3.6 and 4.0 Beta 6.
Try this,Uninstall FF and delete your profile too (Do note this will
delete your bookmarks,Back em up first if needed) in order
to delete it go to c:\users\username\application data
and delete the mozilla folder (Note2: If you use thunderbird as well
enter the mozilla folder and delete only the firefox folder) When done just reinstall.

I did that when I uninstalled it, I deleted every Mozilla file and folder I could find lol. I wanted 100% new install, but it didn’t work anyways, I think it must have a Virus that attacks Firefox? Chrome works okay, apart from it always crashes which is one of the reasons I like FireFox. But mind you the PC is slow because of the CPU working all the time even though it says it’s using 2%…
You could try system restore…

Nice idea thanks =]
Go to run, type firefox -P (with firefox closed), add a new default config or whatever its called. This sometimes works. It allows you to have to different instances of firefox without having to uninstall everything on your main.
