Movies on PS3

January 28th, 2020

Hypothetically would this work.
I download a 1080P movie from here.
I extract it and get a playable movie file (avi or mkv or something)
I then transfer it onto a USB Drive and plug it into my PS3.
From there would I be able to play it somehow?
Maybe if I like save the movie file to the PS3 HDD and then play it?

No because PS3 doesn’t support Mkv container.
If if it supports Avi container, the video or audio might not be supported because they can put many types inside. Tversity can stream videos for PS3 and such on-fly, so link your PS3 to your router or wireless network and go from there.

you can use tsMuxeR to convert .mkv to .m2ts and then the file will be playable on ps3. the conversion only takes a few minutes and tsMuxeR is freeware:

also, i think ps3 supports fat32 but not ntfs so you will have to choose the option in tsMuxeR to split the movie into 4gb parts. and for ps3 to find the videos you need to put all videos into a folder /USB/VIDEO
you can play directly from the usb drive or copy to your ps3 hdd. you must stop all playback to copy files to the ps3 hdd though. for example, if you are playing a video, click triangle and choose stop, then go back and copy.
