Movies PS3 –> .m2ts help for .mkv movies
August 4th, 2016
I know that you can use mkv2vob to change a .mkv video into a format that will play on the PS3. Unfortunately, a lot of times, if the .mkv is 1080p or even 720p, the result is enormous in size and won’t fit on a 4.7GB DVD -R/+R.
Is there a different program that will keep the video quality, and the 5.1 surround, but will make it fit onto a 4.7GB DVD? If so, which program would be the most recommended? If not, what would be the best way to “shrink” the .mkv so that it will fit will both be PS3 capable, and fit on a single burnable DVD disc?
Thanks for any suggestions and advice.
mkv2vob keeps about the same quality and size..and i dont think any 1080p mkv will fit on a single layer dvd… you wont fit 1080p mkv files onto a dvd w/o losiong some quality…usually the cartoon blurays are smaller size b/c they can get away with a smaller bitrate…but 90% of the blurays on here wont fit on a dvd-r…and im 99% sure 1080p wont ever fit on a dvd-r
I wouldn’t mind a slight loss in quality, I’m just trying to find a decent method to make it fit and be playable on my PS3 from a disc.
Is burning to a dvdr dl out of the question? Brrip’s are
Ok if your tv is under 27 inches anything bigger it becomes DVD quality
My TV is a 1080i 42″ plasma. As previously mentioned, my player is a 60GB PS3. I’m hoping to come up with some way to balance the back-up option and overall quality vs. cost. The best I have found for LightScribe back-ups are DVD-R/+R discs. The two primary needs I have are in saving hard drive space, as well as not spending the money of blank Blu-Ray discs, so kids won’t scratch/ruin them. When blank Blu-Ray discs become affordable, it won’t be much as a issue. Where I live, double-layer LightScribe blanks are still a bit pricey. Would there be a way to just take .mkv movies into some format the PS3 would actually be able to read and fit on a 4.7gb disc? Perhaps at least keeping a little bit of the video quality? I’ve read elsewhere that you can take a .mkv and extract the audio and add it back at a lower bit rate, which would solve the size issue. I honestly have no idea how to go about doing that, or what software would be easy to use without a strong learning curve.
yea the 60gb ps3 what i own/use the golden goose of the ps3’s…why dont you try to steer away from lightscribe as they usually cost more than regular dvd-r’s.i dont think your going to get what your looking for shrinking mkv’s to fit onto dvd-r…mkv2vob is a ps3 owners best software…so you only want blurays not dvdrips? i still say buy a pack of dvd+r dl off newegg/walmart etc.. (that arent lightscribe) and mavbe save some money and get the 1080p you want in full 1080p…id tell you to get a external hdd to hook to your ps3 but it has to be fat32 format and files cant be over 4gb…so if you were doing 700mb avi files id say take that route…but since your doing mv blurays you cant
just use ps3 media server
Why not use tsMuxeR to convert mkv to m2ts then split to 4GB size and write either to disk/ pen drive.
better option would be to use ps3 media server. no conversion is needed. can play files of any size. only downside is you need your pc on. when watching movies.
or buy a external hard drive. only problem with an external hard dive is that it has to be fat32 so 4gb file limits. but when you convert your films from mkv to the format you want in mkv2vob just tell it to split the file in 4gb chunks. only takes a few mins to convert the file and split it. (quicker than burning)
I’ve never messed with PS3 Media server. I have used TVersity, but since they changed it to requiring a paid license for full use, I haven’t. Also, I don’t have a external drive to store movies on, and although I could stream them, if Windows craps out (which always does eventually) and I lose them them all. And yes, I have one of the original 60GB PS’s. Unfortunately, no one told me that Sony would screw me over with a firmware update that would remove the 2nd OS option. If I had kept that, then my system would be one of the true golden gooses. If I had kept Linux, I could have played anything, including .mkv
On a side note, if anyone happens to know a way to go back to the last firmware update that still offers the 2nd OS, you would be a godsend.
The reason I chose LightScribe, even though they cost more, is the appearance of the disc itself. I have pretty bad hand writing, so using a marker doesn’t look good, if even legible. Sticky labels for CD/DVDs have a had habit of peeling off, in addition to the cost of the labels and the ink.
I have looked into the discs that come with pre-made labels, but that requires the money to buy not only the ink, but also a rather expensive Espon printer.
However, that’s getting off the original subject. I have no idea who to actually do it, but from what I have read, you can take a .mkv and take out the audio, re-encode it at lower bit rate, then stuff the audio back into the .mkv so MKV2Vob will in effect make a movie fit onto one single DVD -R/+R, without messing up the video quality. I just have no idea of how to do it effectively.
whene i want to play mkv on my ps3 quickly recode it to mp4 i use mkv extract http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVExtractGUI
that will leave u with 2 files a H264 video file and an AAC audio file then i use a prog calld yamb to put it back together as an mp4 press create mp4 button drag and drop the two files in the yamb screen click next so on then your done http://~ Dead file host ~/files/428182968/Yamb-2.1.0.0_beta2_setup.rar
bingo 1 playable ps3 film should only take about 5 mins to use both progs and should keep the same size as the mkv give or take 10/20 mb good luck
Thank you, I will try your suggestion. I appreciate the comments and replies so far. This is quickly becoming my favorite forum.
multiAVCHD is what you want..it will transcode the mkv movie to ps3 compatible format that you can either burn to disk or copy to usb memory/hdd/flashdrive.
