mac book laptop question

hey i know nothing about them cause i dont have one but my friend does and like he went to turn it on and like some sound comes out of it but like the screen wont turn on and now like some picture of a file with a question mark on it keeps popping up anyone know if its crashed or whats wrong with it?

he didnt do anything he said he just turned it off then it wouldnt come back on
