Remember that you will need to reinstall programs, as it says.
Windows 10 is better in that respect, because you can do a repair install and keep everything.
Don’t worry about updates ! Windows will be only too keen to see what it needs and update everything after the refresh
Ever since XP most MS OS’s have had a non-destructive reinstall that allows you to refresh the system without effecting the data. Unfortunately that means rewriting the system files which causes you to loose your critical updates but not programs or data. With XP you could create a slipstreamed disk with SP3 and eliminate at least those criticals but the newer OS’s don’t have SP’s yet (win8.1 not withstanding). What I did to save some time when I did a fresh install of Win7 SP1 was to download Autopatcher. I believe they have a version for 8. That way after your refresh you can run Autopatcher and it examines your system to see what updates are missing and downloads them for you. Once you have that set of updates you can save it somewhere just in case you have to run the installer again, or later download a new updated set. It doesn’t always get them all but it helps immensely.
