Different download speeds on Fileserve

January 20th, 2020

I am wondering if anyone could help. I am trying to download a game for the Wii off Fileserve. My neighbour has left their internet open so I am downloading each part alternately on my PC (wired on my network) and my netbook (wireless on their network).
We are both on the 10 Meg Virgin media line as I have checked previously.
On the netbook which is running Windows 7 I am getting speeds 900kbps – 1.1Mbps which is great. But on the desktop (which is running XP) I am only getting speeds of 250kbps maximum ?
I am using the free download option on both so why should there be a speed difference, surely if anything my wired connection should keech all over the wireless ?

Answer #1
Did u check any other file hosting services on desktop?
Answer #2
Yup. Rapidshare, Hotfile, Uploading and Megaupload. The speeds haven’t been that great but I thought that was down to being a free user. So when I downloaded from the same site using two different networks then I could see there is / was a problem.

Are u using anything like IDM?

Hang on. So on your neighbours your getting a slower speed? More than likely due to the fact that its a greater distance for signal, no matter if its showing full. Could also be interference.
As a side note, you know this is illegal? Not trying to preach and tell you what’s right or wrong, just making sure your aware. Also, dont forget the virgin media throttling once bandwidth is exceeded. Sounds like your getting throttled and they arent.

No on my neighbours (wireless) I am getting full speeds (1Meg) but on my desktop which is wired to my network I am only getting 250 kbps. But we are both 10Meg.
I am fully aware that it is illegal to use someone elses network without permission. Thing is I am downloading a Wii game then playing it on a chipped Wii.
I could get done three times !

I was at first on the netbook and I tried just downloading without and was still getting 1Mbps.
Answer #7
lol – yeah, i wasnt trying to say anything bad, just making sure your aware!
But anyway- 250kbps is the throttled speed for a 10mb connection. You’ve probably hit your download limmit and will be throttled for 5 hours.

u took the words out of my mouth
Answer #9
That would make sense but why not the neighbours too ? Each part was 950Mb and there was five so they would have reached the limit albeit through my use only.
Managed to get all five parts downloaded anyway. Just wondered why my speeds were keech.
Answer #10
have you downloaded anything else on your connection?
Answer #11
Yes loads, everything from torrents to the various file sharing sites. The speeds of these are inconsistant. I am wondering if there is an issue with my desktop somewhere. As the netbook downloads at full speed but the desktop seems throtled even when on the same network.
