Answer #1
Your download speed is capped by the download package you pay for.
What speeds do you pay for?

grr anoying thing is we cant even change

The more files you download at a time the slower the speed for each file. How could it be the same for all files, that would mean you some how are getting more bandwidth out of nowhere…

i pay for talktalk plus - up to 24mbs and unlimited downloads? thanks

Connection speed is advertised in MegaBits not Megabytes per second.
Your connection allows you to download at a maximum rate of 3MB/s (Megabytes per second), meaning you’re getting half of what you should be getting.
Oh, and about the halving ‘problem’, this is simply your bandwidth being split to accommodate the parallel downloads, this is normal.
Are you using premium accounts?
What download manager do you use?

there are a number of reasons why he is getting 1.5mb/s compared to 3mb/s.
things like if he is on wireless, how far he is from the router, the quality of the router. the distance from the nearest exchange point. and also 3mb/s usually the max possible, when there is hardly any traffic. (traffic on the isp servers, ie other internet users) you would usually receive less than that.
i can say that because here in nz we have 24mbs connections too, and i dont think i know anyone who has a download speed faster than 2.3 mb/s.
i myself get 1.7, but thats cus my modem router is crap.

It’s also because as Wise-San said, which is parallel download’s in which they halve it. Same thing as my service provider which is Comcast (30Mbit). That’s why I use download manager and just download things 1 at time to get full speed.

you know you are getting full speed, even when you are downloading two files at a time right?
it would (should) take the same amount of time to download two files separately compared to them together.

You mention speeds up to 24Mb/s so I’m thinking you might have ADSL2.The actual speed depends on the length and quality of the line.
I only get a speed of 5Mb/s.
To check your speed go to.

Talk Talk is adsl 2+ annex A, it’s advertised as up to 24 meg, btw it’s not Unlimited (check their TOS, they do all kinds of traffic shaping).
Unless you live next door to the BT exchange you won’t be getting full speeds anyway.
Best way to check your download speed is to download Ubuntu (fast server), you don’t need to download the entire ISO.
As people have pointed out – if you combine the speeds of parallel downloads, then that will give you your speed.

I got this Win 7 gadget called Network Meter.
This gives a graph of your traffic and your total speeds.

Wait, TalkTalk is ran on BT ADSL lines?
No wonder OP doesn’t get his correct speeds.
On ADSL connections there are many limiting factors, the key factor is the length of the telephone line from the exchange to the location. The presence of hills, valleys, water and the route the cabling takes (typically following a road) all add to the length of the line. Other factors include the quality of the copper cabling/joints and the presence of aluminium on the line, getting half of the speed that you pay for on ADSL is normal, remember that ADSL uses the same copper telephone lines installed in the early 1900’s, it is an outdated and inefficient method of data transfer.

yup, and Talk Talk don’t even have their own DSLAMS in the BT exchanges (like my provider, Bethere does)
He is getting correct speeds, it’s up to 24 meg.
For the reasons that you have posted above, and others, he won’t get 24 meg.
I live quite near to my exchange and don’t get that, although I have adsl2+ annex M , which gives greater upload speed, but reduces the downstream by the same amount.
I forgot to post this earlier, if you look at your line attenuation (you can find this in your modem/router config page) you can work out what speed roughly you should be getting.

There are a few ways you can improve the connection, if you have a BT NTE5 Master socket, you can get a filtered faceplate. I got one of these years ago when I was with Bulldog on a 16 meg line, and managed to gain an extra meg throughput.

I mean that they enforce their Fair Usage Policy. Try downloading a couple of TB’s of data over a month and see what happens…
They are notorious for throttling torrents.

Unfortunately I haven’t a clue at what stage they start enforcing the Fair Usage Policy (FUP), they’d probably just send you a warning e-mail first if you went over their “secret limit”.
The FUP’s are terrible with most ISP’s, as they never post a set limit, one of the reasons I stick with my ISP as they openly admit on their forum they have never enforced their FUP for excessive usage, only for sending spam via their smtp servers. (I could go with BT Infinity for faster connection, but still wary of their FUP)
You could check out Digital Spy and thinkbroadband forums, see if there is any concrete evidence of limits, (ie when people have been capped etc)
only found this thread about throttling torrents (in a rush)

thanks a lot im unable to switch however as my dad has his talktalk email for all his work and would be nearly impossible to switch 🙂
Answer #22
No sweat, you are probably tied into a long contract with Talk Talk anyway.
E-mail is easy enough to set up to forward them to another account eg Google mail.
Bethere is “no frills” you get no e-mail accounts with them, and to be honest, most of their customers, that post on their forum all have connections with IT somehow.
If people have issues they don’t need to contact Bethere, they can get help off on-line other customers who do tech support etc for a living. I often go there just to keep up with what’s happening in the future of the ISP.
O2 bought them out a few years back for their infracstructure (DSLAMS in the BT exchanges), incidently Telefonica the huge Spanish ISP owns O2.
Talk Talk, was originally Carphone Warehouse, but they bought out AOL UK, and then demerged the company, so now the phone shops are seperate from the ISP side. They bought out Tiscali and Bulldog too. I think they are currently the top 2 provider in the UK after BT.
I wouldn’t go to Virgin as they use Phorm, and even Talk Talk do data pimping.
