connecting a 10 year old computer to the internet
January 24th, 2020
She would need an Ethernet adapter. I used to use a PCI Ethernet adapter. Then, after connecting it she would just need to plug the cable into the adapter. That’s for ADSL however. I don’t know much about other technologies. My friend used to use cable internet and connected his modem through USB. Good luck mate ^_^
could a usb port be put in a ten year old computer?
There are plenty USB cards that are for PCI and similar connections. What sort of computer does she have?
I used to use a dial up modem with a serial port connection..
…and I thought I was lucky….
Just put an ethernet card in the PC if it does not already have one and connect the modem to that..easy…it’s the best way of doing it with new PCs too….No USB required
Of course the modem needs to have a Ethernet connection, but then they all do as far as I know..
Find out:
1/ What CPU & operating system her PC uses, a 10 year old PC might be a low speed Pentium, I have one from 1995 which has a 100MHz 80486 (pre Pentium days)
2/ What internet connection she has (Adsl, cable, dial up) and what speed it runs at
3/ Identify what connections her internet connection uses (to the computer) eg. Ethernet, USB
4/ Find out what connections her PC has already(Usb, Ethernet, PCI or ISA slots)
Then something to connect the two. That might mean an ethernet card (PCI or maybe ISA – avoid ISA if at all possible) or a USB card. Try to avoid USB if at all possible as it is not as good as ethernet
Well mate i dont know if a USB will work with it being so old
most of the time they normally come with it even in 97…….
how about going to buy her a christmas gift that is only 299 (a brand new computer )
could a usb port be put in a ten year old computer?
Even a ten year old computer should have at least one USB port at the back.
Yes! All she needs is a modem (Broadband is OK) and the modem software install CD.
Thanks everyone
Yes its a blue cable for me but make sure youve got anti-virus and parental control software.
