Connecting 2 pc’s to internet from a LAN line ?

January 25th, 2020

i googled this and prepared everything but i just want to make sure everything is set before i make this for a friend of mine.. so this friend goes to internet through a network cable that’s connected to ADSL from his neighbor.. (2 neighbors sharing one ADSL line and he connects the Ethernet cable to his network card) .. and now he wants to have access to the internet on another pc.. so both pc’s are having network cards, both have XP as their OS.
what i have :
1- ADSL switch (2-4 ports).
2- Long Ethernet cable, some plugs, wire cutter & the crimper tool
3- both the pc’s of course =))
so i will have the original lan cable (the one coming from the internet source to his original pc) plugged into the switch… and from the switch i will have 2 cables to both the pc’s
what should be the ethernet cables settings in the 4 ends of the 2 cables ?? all crossovered ? all straight ?
i mean it will be like this :
......Internet source (Plug1)<=original cable=>(Plug2) (Switch)__(Plug3)<=cable2=>(Plug5) PC1
                                                                \(Plug4)<=cable3=>(Plug6) PC2

what should be the cable arrangements for plugs 3 & 5 (cable1) and of plugs 4 & 6 (Cable2) ?
straight or crossover ? and if crossovered should it be from one side or both sides ?
=-=
ouch i feel awckward now :S

Answer #1
yup that will work fine. Just remember if the original modem uses a dynamic ip it may require a reboot once everything is plugged it to start working.

Answer #3
What do you mean crossover? You just plug it into your pc and the splitter.
Answer #4
actually i will be the one to set the ethernet cable myself … it’s not a ready cable… http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/ethernetcables.html
so as you see there’s two arrangements for the wires of the cable .. the straight and the crossover …
my own knowledge that the straight arrangements is used for the connection between an internet source and a pc/lap… and the crossover between the similar devices <pc to pc> or <hub to hub>
so i think in my case all will be straight arrangements.
still need someone to insure me though
Answer #5
* From switch to PC you will used the straight-through cable so both PC will used the straight-through cable connected to the switch…
* PC to PC will used the crossover cable…
Answer #6
The 2 new cables that you are adding are from switch to PC, so they should be “straight”…(AFAIK).
Answer #7
: thx a million mate…
i won’t use the pc to pc i guess.. i just need to connect both pc’s online .. that friend of me is 55 years old .. i don’t think he will be using pc 2 pc connections for network gaming
Answer #8
if the switch is decent it wouldn’t even matter if you use crossover or straight… switches and routers switch the arrangement over themselves (cable check)..
But indeed:
pc to pc is crossover
pc to switch is straight

Answer #10

Answer #11
All done and working well…
used a 5 port TP-link switch , and i connected the cables between the pc and the switch all straight connections
the old usual (OW-O | GW-Bl | BlW-G | BrW-Br)
didn’t need to check any settings with the OS’s, they just read the LAN connection then the Internet connection and Voila !
thanks again guys.
