Blackberry Curve 8520 wont UPGRADE

Hello everyone. I just got my girlfriend a Blackberry Curve 8520. I download the desktop software, then click on upgrade device and it said there where no upgrade. But then I clicked on other, and there was a 5.0 upgrade. It said it was only for Blackberry subscribers.
What does that mean? Where do I subscribe? Do I have to pay? Where can i find info on this?
I have searched Google and have found nothing but useless information. Please someone help me out.

you need to be an active subscriber to sign up, i think that was what the email thing was for 😀
but i think il stick with the version i have

So how do I become an active subscriber? And, why don’t you want to upgrade? Should I stay with the lower version as well?

i had similar problems upgrading from 4.6 to 5.0
solution. make sure you have downloaded and installed Blackberry desktop manager and the 5.0 update itself to your computer. do not have them running.
then goto C:/Program Files/Common Files/Research In Motion/AppLoader and delete vendor.xml
google bbsak, download and install then run it.
click on wipe device. wait until complete. Now run Apploader and your new 5.0 OS is waiting to be installed.
bbm,email, appworld,windows live will not work without a data plan.
