you can get stuff off here, but you will have to convert and upload it using a program like calibre. personaly i would recommend a Sony PRS-600 over a Kindle

Not completely true – you don’t need to convert everything, quite alot of the uploads are already in the correct format.

>>>WARNING<<<
Don’t buy the lower End Kindle,
it does not have PDF Support and calibre does not do well in conversion..
Stay away from it, if you want buy the higher end Kindle..
Sony PRS-600 Suffers from serve glare issues..

i wouldnt call it severe. unless you are putting it flat on a desk and pointing a desk lamp directly at it it is perfectly usable.

To use on the move (eg: a train) also give you the glare issues, anywhere but in buildings tbh where you can aim away from the artificial lights.
It is abit too glossy for my liking of nice easy reading.

The reason i turned the the Kindle was mainly because of the price, but with the sony ereader it really out prices me at this current time, i just thought it would be a good idea for when im commuting home and it would save me money on books but at nearly 200 it just doesn’t really seem a good deal to me Will the sony PRS-600 do everything that i wanted from the Kindle ?
Answer #18
Check Here http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665921192#reviews
You can see what problems the People face,
The lamp + case is abt 60$ more making it un-reasonable..
btw, do you have pdf’s of your collage books ?
Answer #19
its a lot cheaper in America than it is in the UK
i dont know what my uni books are going to be yet, i was just thinking ahead of ideas on how to save money on books because most of my friends spent about 150 on books which is quite a lot of money
Answer #20
Finding Specific books is a pain,
One Method is to get them Scanned and made into PDF,
But they will all appear is Images,
so pdf support is a must..
Maybe you can consider the top spec kindle ?

Yes it is,
I also bought the Basic one for the same reason, ‘now i’m stuck with it…
Save up for the DX, it will help in second year of uni, etc
Answer #23
Why are you saying that he should save for the DX?
FYI I have the 3rd gen of the Kindle shipping now and obviously on here to figure out what I can or can not do
Answer #24
Have an iPad.
Answer #25
you will not regret getting the Kindle. I love every minute of it Image
Answer #26
Hmm – I’m pretty sure the new Kindle can read .pdf, which is what a lot eBooks are, and a number of sites say that pretty much any other filetype is convertible. (including ePub). I’ve just taken the plunge and ordered one for Uni – especially since it’ll help reading the 50-60 page PDFs you have to read. Personally, I think it’s a good idea
Answer #27
In my opinion, Amazon Kindle is a waste of money. Get an iPhone or iPad.
Answer #28
I have an iPad and a 3rd gen wifi Kindle. I prefer the iPad in terms of clarity, ease, etc, but it’s too heavy to read for long periods. I also have used pdfs on the ipad–I use “good reader”–great clarity, but need to scroll around screen to read (I use landscape mode). I have converted pdf’s using calibre for the Kindle–crappy output and hard to read. Bottom line: Love both, but: Kindle for novels, books; iPad for all else.

Might’ve already been posted but calibre was pretty crap with my PDFs, I use mobipocket, they come out pretty much perfect for the kindle.
