Administrator rights issues

January 31st, 2020

Hello! Been having this problem for a while now. Luckily I don’t have the habit of changing “sensitive” files much but occasionally you have to. And it’s then when it becomes annoying. Although I’m administrator on my own pc, somehow things have changed a while back to me not having the posibility to edit certain files. I went to the properties of the file I wanted to change and it’s still saying that admin has full control.
I also get the occasional poppup saying I should contact admin, but often I can just click through it. Too bad it’s not the case for everything. I just double/tripple checked which account I’m on and it’s the same as always, and it’s still saying “you da admin”!?!
If someone could advise me on this, it would be greatly appreciated. If you need any info, just let me know…
edit: I’ve been able to change the file, which is good, but I still don’t understand the change of behaviour my pc underwent some time ago…

Answer #1
Yea..I’m in the process of trying to solve the same problem..
I just did setup a download manager but it refuses to download anything..
Checked Windows firewall and it’s not even listed..
Not sure how to solve yours..But I just loged in to another Windows in a separate partition..
Widows firewall disabled..But installed my own firewall and have full control..
Same download manger (portable) works perfect..
Answer #2
Sometimes the change in UAC is caused by a Windows update. There was a large update a few months back that changed a lot of my settings. The MS guys also like to make it more difficult to change some settings. Instead of 2 or 3 clicks to change something it might now take 6 or 7. They need to have one big box to check that says “Unlock All The Crap On My PC”.
Answer #3
^^Was thinking about mentioning this, but ever since the trouble I’ve had with that one KB which suddenly made my windows 7 not genuine anymore, I stopped updating. Thought this might have something to do with my issues as well. But you’re saying that even regularly updating doesn’t keep you safe of the hassle?
@: I wish I had the luxury of having another windows in a separate partition, but I needs the space for all my games and other crap…
Answer #4
You can access the windows management console and fix the permissions. Type mmc in the run dialog and add/remove snap-in and check every component regulating permissions. I’m not at home if you don’t manage to find them I will write another post telling which need to be checked.
Answer #5
^^I’d appreciate some more advice please, in your own time of course. I’m no computerwiz but there’s 1 golden rule I’ve tried to follow, i.e. don’t mess with stuff you don’t understand and I’m afraid this falls under that category. Found the snap-in etc, but I’m not really sure how to proceed. ‘Authorization Manager’ is an obvious target, but from the sound of things there are more components that need to be checked? fyi, the only added snap-in so far is the Console Root which is probably the default?
Answer #6
Authorization manager is a snap-in to grant permission to certain apps to make them interract with a role based system. Add local users and groups and check if you are on the administrators group. Then add the snapin of local computer policy, go to Windows Settings, security settings, local policies and user rights assignment. Check if your group(you need to be into it) administrator, can do all the administrative tasks like Take ownership, perform maintenance tasks. Sometimes Windows update lock some files and then keeps it freezed. If you are in the administrator group in the elevated prompt you can force delete a file by using del /f
Answer #7
With the local users and groups I get the error that this snap-in may not be used with the windows version I have, which is w7 Home Premium… I do have to keep the box of local computer ticked? Looked around a bit and there seem to be ways to circumvent that, but they look complicated…

Is Windows fully genuine now? If not, then the use of Watfix and Windows loader would normally be the go..

win 7 home premium doesnt have policy editor by default and you need to do some extra tweaking to enable it which can be headache
i need you to answer a few questions 1- is your windows original or pirated one ?
2- anyone else than you have an access to your computer , like wife or kids that can mess things up ? also anyone else than you have an another administrator account on your pc ?
3- do you remember any event than that update that started problems , like installing something ? if not can you give me the exact number of that update ?
4- most important of all , the file you were trying to modify was under which folder , program files , program data or windows ? and how exactly you managed to modify it after your first failed attempts ?

Added msi file (oh contextmenu is the rightclick menu? I think had that option already), UAC checked and was already turned off. Godmode looks interesting, but I’ll save it for later. As to answer the question if my Windows is fully genuine now. Made a topic about it in the past, but didn’t go through with the suggestion as it was getting a bit complicated at the time. I’d have to say no. I bought the windows license when I bought my pc. But ever since that update from hell, I’ve been getting a ‘windows is not genuine’-message in bottom-right of desktop (which disappears each time I check computer properties) and a regular poppup telling me my system might be in danger because I have naughty ware installed on it. Hum, I guess I can’t get out from under having to use the removewat and stuff anymore…

1. windows is original, please check answer to .
2. no, it’s my precious.
3. sorry, can’t remember any specific event. Also, I’m afraid I can’t give you the exact number of the update. From the start I kept the updates at install at my discretion. The actual update was done by accident, suddenly all the clutter I’ve been forestalling all that time got installed. Took a couple of hours. After that my pc went nuts, telling me I had 1 day to input my key. Of course by that time I had forgotten I had stuck the key to the back of my pc. It was that dreaded KB971033. I remember w7 SP2 was also getting installed. Afterwards, smiling at MS, I uninstalled all the updates, but I’ve never gotten rid of those ‘not genuine’-messages. I know certain updates are useful, but getting ripped of like that made me hate the evil empire that is MS. Those updates were probably more than a year ago now, but my trouble with the admin issues are more recents; a couple months to 6 months back. 4. c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. I managed to modify it by running my notepad as admin and opening it through the program. Which, I take it I should’ve done in the first place.
Answer #11
ah hosts file , you can modify it with notepad with admin privileges but if you encounter something that can not be modified through notepad or problem with copy pasting , try the explorer.exe method that i just wrote on that topic yesterday.

” a regular poppup telling me my system might be in danger because I have naughty ware installed on it.” this seems like a sign of a crapware installed on your system , does this pop-up also direct you to a weird site that you can download a software to fix your problems ? do you use any av software other than windows defender ?
for administrator related problems , the easiest method to create a new admin account and carry your settings and files to it , other tweaking things may lead more confusion if you dont know what you are doing.
also can you look at the oem key saved on windows is still matches with the oem key you have bought ? you can right click on computer then properties , then scroll down a little bit to see oem key saved on windows.
Answer #12
Sorry, probably phrased it wrong. The poppup I get says “Optional update delivery is not working. You may be victim of software counterfeiting. …” I have avg.
About the admin issues, I just want to get rid of it once and for all. Again, no computerwiz but I can follow instructions… About the oem key, I don’t think so. It’s the product Id in computer properties, isn’t it? While the product key I’ve bought has 5 sets of 5 numbers and letters, the product Id only has 4 sets: xxxxx-OEM-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. Interesting fact, if I scroll down fast enough I manage to see an empty product Id for a few seconds before changing to the 4 sets…
Answer #13
So basically you want to disable all the security on the pc ? Yeah that’s not a good idea. This is computer security 101 least privilege hell I don’t even use an admin account for daily use itll just ask for the admin password whenever you want to install software/malware.
As for windows activation use any KMS activator simples .

ah i m sorry , it is true it is written product identity at there , not the key. it says , windows activated at there , right ?
if you completely disable uac , it will make some help , but also decrease the security of your computer. look the first method below.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/299-user-account-control-uac-change-notification-settings.html
but the ultimate solution will be creating a new admin account and carrying all your settings and files to it , it would be really long and complicated to write it here , so i searched for some tutorials but i couldnt find. there something called windows easy transfer which is for transferring data between computers but it should also work for carrying data among user accounts in a specific system. if someone else knows better method or can find you a better tutorial , this is your best bet
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/transfer-files-settings-from-another-computer#1TC=windows-7
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/transferring-files-settings-faq#1TC=windows-7
these things would give you an idea , there is also a video tutorial which requires silverlight plugin , i dont have and i didnt watch.
also it is better to install malwarebytes anti malware and make a scan with it to be sure that there is nothing malicious
https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/
install free one and do not activate trial which is asked at the end of the installation.
for transferring exact settings and folders between 2 accounts , consult since he is here , he surely know a better method since your admin acc seems to be corrupted and need to replaced
Answer #15
@: Not really, all I was saying is that something changed a while back and now with almost everything I try to do I get told that I don’t have the rights to do so… Like I said, sometimes I can just click through it, but other times it ends there. If you have a better suggestion, feel free to tell me, that’s why I asked the question in helpdesk in the first place, so I could hear the opinions of people who know more about it than me…
@: thanks for the help, I’ll have to find a quiet moment to go through all the stuff you’ve shared…
Answer #16
Even if Windows is genuine, by license or loader, it may not be happy until it is validated..
Go here using IE.. (if it wants to install a plug in, active X, or file, just let it)
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/
Answer #17
You can run a check(with sfc /scannow in an admin prompt) to check if the Windows’ services are alright. You can check if the Windows update files are okay and refresh them. sfc /scannow will find the common errors, if it doesn’t fix it you can run Windows update fix-it tool that you can find on internet.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Try also to delete a file and see the event log(eventvwr in run prompt) to see if there are errors.
