720PXvid.AC3 vs. 720p.x264.mkv
August 24th, 2013
it all depends on how it was encoded. The X264 is often smaller, but the quality is often not there if it has been encoded with too higher compression or other settings which are not confiured properly. The XVid is usually larger but again it could be a bad image if configured incorrectly.
It’s really impossible to say. Sorry.
Usually considering both are encoded right, Both around 3gb of size, Which one will be better, I think mkv format is not good.
xvid is not really meant for HD while x264 is, I only use x264 for any HD material. Xvid only for DVD rip / old SD TV rip.
For the same file size, size the x264 in the .mkv container should be better, as the x264 codec gives better compression than XviD.
x264 better .mkv better than xvid.

And you think that because? AVI is flawed in many ways (non-standard extensions, lack of features, doesn’t really support h.264 etc etc) MKV is superior in a great many ways.
As for your original question: Given sane encoding settings, x264 will have a better quality at the same size than Xvid.
Keep in mind, that the audio also impacts the size. (AC3 is a codec for audio, usually goes along with XViD, wheras DTS often goes along with x264)
I prefer x264 with AC3 audio. There really is no need for DTS in my opinion. The file size for DTS audio will triple what it would be with AC3. Unless you have a high dollar surround sound theater system, you don’t need it.

Even if you had a very good surround system, the technical superiority of DTS is not established. Often, the DTS mix is different from the AC3 one which is one of the primary factors why they sound different. (DTS usually uses higher volumes, boosted high and low frequencies and such) This makes a comparison very difficult.
