In the end I just gave up and downloaded a Corporate version which installed nicely without all that activation rubbish.

Try to do a Repair or Upgrade using the XP CD (not the one you allready tried) and all your stuff should be OK.

Put XP CD into DVD/CD drive then reboot your PC.
When this pic comes up click on Install Windows XP

If this screen comes up click on next and then follow it all the way through. Choose your keyboard type at the page that will show up and install additional (usually eastern asian) languages only if required. Check all the settings for keyboard etc before you continue.

Try this first and see if the upgrade option comes up ………… if it does not come back to the board for more help
Make sure you do NOT use the CD that does not get you past activation (i.e. the one you have allready tried)

And this should’nt lose anything on hardrive?
Answer #11
Quote from the topic you just posted:
You must perform a clean install with this
So you don’t download that one because you will loose everything.
Look for a corporate version of Windows XP Pro SP2 to download then burn that to disk.

Use a student version of XP. It’s sent to University’s for their students, and doesn’t not need to be activated, and no serial is needed. It’s so students learn how to install XP.
