It would be very helpful to those who try to help you if you DEFINE-CLARIFY the type of errors you are talking about. There are MANY possibilities & without Details it is just guessing & would require many replies back & forth postings. (Not Knowing Exactly What the Problem Is)-One possible Cause of your problem– An error will result if you do not have the cdrom as the 1st boot so that the pc will read the xp cd when you start up the pc. If that is the case you need to set the drive sequence in the bios so the cdrom is FIRST in the boot up. Another Possible Option is you can place the cd in the tray-close it-hit restart & tap the f8 key while the pc is booting up. The screen will display your installed drives.. Move w/ the arrow keys up or down & highlight the the c drive-hit enter & it should begin to read the xp cd. Other than that you need to spend some Time to SPECIFY if you want others to spend their time to help you.

Im sorry you see I don`t have much skills in computer but I hope this helps it says: “the file ‘asms’ on Windows xp home editions service pack 2 cd is needed” it wont continue without it what am I suppose to do?
Answer #7
If a file is missing it may be a damaged disc you are attempting to use , check for scratches or debris on the media , and retry , otherwise , its a corrupted download (if you downloaded it) or attempt to burn at a slower speed.

Wait what? Now I’m confused. You said you were getting the error during the Formatting process. But what you’re describing now is the process of copying files to the HDD. Please make sure you provide us the correct info.
And yes, this sounds like a broken CD. BUT believe it or not, I had a similar case, and in my case it turned out to be the HDD that was broken. (Yes the HDD, after having it replaced it worked perfectly). But yeah, check the CD first obviously.

From Msoft RE: ‘Asms’ error message,
"The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed" error message when you install Windows XP
When you install Microsoft Windows XP, you may receive the following error message:
[Files Needed] The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK. HEREhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/311755

This persons solution for the ‘Asms’ error : Solution: "Well, this will only work on specific computers obviously but it could be a useful clue. I just used the other CD-rom drive! This computer had 2 and I was installing from the top drive. After trying another XP disk and a few other ideas I found online (nothing worked obviously), I just stuck the original CD into the other drive, rebooted, and all is well now!"

[ SOLVED ] installation Failed D:\I386\asms.
