OScommerce or similar, help for setting up a store

August 5th, 2016

I have a 1and1 uk home package and i’m pretty sure that I would need a business package before I can begin to experiment with OScommerce or similar open source software? I have a basic knowledge of creating websites but no knowledge of php and mysql.
I would like to set up a basic but professional looking store (just with Paypal checkout), with a smart looking template, and the ability to change templates in the future etc.
Any sensible helpful advice would be very much appreciated.

I’ll be honest, you’ll be far better off upgrading your hosting to 1and1 business. I have as many bugbears with large companies – especially online – as the next man, but Schlund really are the best when it comes to service and support in this area.

Thanks, yes I was thinking that I might have to opt for the business package in order to get the sql database use etc. I just hope that if I do that it’s easy to implement a store as I don’t want to spend the extra and find i’m useless at getting the most out of it ha ha. Also, if I upgrade do you know if my current site and email addresses on the home package will be lost?
Thanks again,
Steve

No, your data and settings will remain intact.

To be honest i don’t really like 1&1. I think they are overpriced. I would use another host and see what you can get with a VPS or a Dedicated server, this will prove invaluable in the future.
