any other activity like burning cd/dvd.. more info pls..
probably windows making system restore points, ive had this with new windows installs before. takes upto 15% of your hdd
yea could be the restore points but if u think its a virus try a online virus they mostly are very gooood
U said u have stopped automatic update . i want to know whose either windows update or antivirus update if antivirus the enable it (or els it me harm u pc) and if windows see this.
Which version of windows xp your using, means if u r using sp2,if yes it is getting updated to sp 3.
if u dont want ur os to b updated then disable it
Msoffice also takes some space for updates

It will isolate exactly where in the Windows folder the space is being taken up.
If you could post back with a screen shot of the scan or the name of the folder/file taking up the space on your hard drive.
If you are at all uncertain whether you have a virus or not, its always best to be safe than sorry, so if you want to you can do the following:
Download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware to your desktop. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/download/40c4eb89767dc8d8e37066fc2e8ff38d/ Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\\Documents and Settings\\Username\\Application Data\\Malwarebytes\\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware\\Logs\\mbam-log-date (time).txt

@- i have stopped automatic update of my windows, my antivirus is fully updated. and i use windows xp service pack 2, i dont think ms office is not doing this, cause i used this version of office earlier and i didnt notice any problem then!

check add/remove files if there are unknown softwares installed. use disk cleanup for unwanted files in the TEMP folder.
@- i dont have any unwanted softwares installed, and my temp folder is cleaned!
are there any startup items unknown to you. check msconfig/startup. or simply use taskman to see if there are unwanted applications running that is taking up your hdd space. also turn on show hidden and system files in folder options for you to see unwanted or suspecious file names in your hdd!
@- nope, there is nothing unknown in startup and nothing unknown is running showed by task manager either. and no unwanted or suspicious files in my hdd is shown after turning on show hidden and system files in folder option. thanks anyway!
@- couldnot find anything wrong by scanning with TreeSize Professional. the results of completing removal with malwarebytes is given bellow

you can check the file size of the each folders in your hdd ex program files or the windows folder itself or the user files and documents to find out where is the unknown occupying the space.
try using a program like JDiskReport, it will analyse your hard drive and show you how your space is being used
Ok, well can you clarify what your problem is?
I thought you wanted to analyse where the space of your hard drive was being used up, which you can do with treesize…
And can you tell us the size of your hard drive and how much is disappearing?
i think the malware removing software suggested by works. the continuous occupying of disk space is stopped, but i cant recover my lost disk space. only the drive contains window is infected, and it is of 9.76GB, and the free space is 1.43GB. i have installed a few softwares among wich MS office takes maximum space.
can anybody tell me that what is the standard size of windows folder of windows xp service pack 2 installation? what does MSOCache folder contain in the root drive containing windows? is there any problem if i delete the folder and its contents?
i can just about guarantee it will be your winsxs folder
if you install something like treeview it will show you exactly where your space is used
If you scan the windows folder with tree size then it will list every byte in that folder in ascending order of size. Therefore all the ‘lost disk space’ will be accounted for and will be displayed by the program
Is there any keylogger s/w installed? taking screenshots /recording the entire screen thereby taking up the space?
go start -> run “chkdsk c: /f”, and say yes to everything, then reboot
all problem lies within kaspersky. i got same problem again, and suddenly i found that kaspersky occupis approx 6.5 GB of space, i uninstalled kaspersky, and everything become alright! i dont know, what happened with kaspersky? is the problem is only with the version i have!
get nod32. other than the firewall being a tad overzealous at times ive never had problems with it
