[ANSWERED]Re encoding movie to uncrop/crop size ONLY?

January 21st, 2020

Hello all. I need a bit of help here. I am trying to fix some files I have with different size other than 1080/720.
For example, I have a 1080p movie with size 1920×1038. I want to uncrop it to 1920x1080. I want it to keep the same quality of course, I dont want to lose anything in quality or the subtitles or languages track.
Can anyone help me in achieving this?
Thanks so much.

720p movies are expected to have a resolution of 1280 x 720 and 1080p movies with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (both having an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 or 16:9), but most movies are shot in a different aspect ratio as compared to monitor aspect ratios, with the most common of them being 1.85:1, 2.39:1 or 2.40:1.
While scaling this movie to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio, the width of the frame is the one that is scaled with the height being proportionately decreased, and to compensate for the difference in height, black bars are inserted at the top and bottom of the frame.
Most encoders discard or crop the aforementioned black bars (it’s unwanted information that will increase the file size) while keeping the width of the video frame constant (1280 for 720p and 1920 for 1080p) thus giving a variable height on the video which depends on the content.
So I would say that this variation is perfectly normal.
Besides, in the example you’ve given (1038 -> 1080), there’s a difference of 42 pixels. Now you don’t have the information to fill out the 42 pixels and the only way you could fill it with actual content is to stretch the video frame by 42 pixels. This would throw off the aspect ratio and would subsequently reduce the picture quality (blurriness due to averaging of information and stretching of the picture).
Another way would be to fill it with black bars, which is redundant.
Besides, if a picture is cropped, that information is lost. So, I’d say it’s all right to leave it as it is.
Hope this helps. Cheers.

Give handbrake a try and see if that fills your needs. It let you change resolution. I have to change them all the time, so i can watch some things. I can’t tell you if quality gets lost, or whether you’ll lose subtitles or languages, but i’m happy with what i’m getting.

Uncropping may only be of some use if you wanted to make it into a Blu-ray or similar..
Otherwise exactly what Zedd said..
You are not missing out on any of the picture at all, and the quality is still true 720 0r 1080p

TY for all your help people….
, I do want to make them into BR movies so that is why I am looking to uncrop them. I can already do this on the program I use, but it takes to long so I was looking for a faster better way.
Thanks all
