just buy a 1TB HDD and put on sata 2 slot. after start windows u can show New 1 TB HDD.
My opinion Buy external HDD.

Use a backup tool and copy the old drive to the new drive…Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost…Disk to Disk option..
After you are happy with the new drive you can go ahead and format the old drive to free up the space..

I don’t think my laptop would have another slot for a 2nd HD
Well I have an 1 TB and a 500gb external but im using them. So I find it easier just to upgrade my hd.
I also have noticed in the control panel I have an option to create a system image. Would this do what im requesting? Like keep all my program the way ther are and such…folders.. etc.

What you need to do, is make an image of your drive as lionden suggested, to an external drive. I use Acronis True Image Home. Then stick the new hdd in the lappy, and boot from the Acronis boot disk, and browse for the image on the external. Then just restore the image to the new drive. Or – connect the new drive as an external and create an image to that.
Don’t bother trying to do it with the Win 7 option to create a system image.
That’s it.
Once you are happy – you can format the old hdd, maybe use it in a 2.5″ hdd USB enclosure as an external, you can get them for less than £3.
That Spinpoint M8 is a nice hdd, however it’s only 5400 rpm.
*Edit – I would suggest that once you have your OS on the new 1TB drive, that you create a partition just for the OS – use the rest of the space for storage, I normally use about 120 GB for the OS. (Acronis Disk Director) – So that your OS is on a C drive, but data is on a different partition showing as D drive.

Get a Hard Drive Docking Station (I have a StarTech SATDOCKU3SEF). You can get another brand for about $20.
Install the new 1TB hard drive on your computer.
Put the old 500 GB hard drive in the docking station.
Connect the docking station with USB to your PC.
Copy everything over to the new hard drive.
