Intsalling new OS
August 6th, 2013
I am fairly noob when it comes to computers, so explain this to me in simple instructions
I want to completely erase everything in my current laptop and install a new OS. How do i go about doing this?
Thank you
Boot from the OS install DVD/thumb drive, format the drive, install it, done.
Download an ISO file of an OS you want. Burn the ISO onto a disk. Insert the disk and install it. Choose the reformat option, and install.
Download the OS that you want to install – I will assume you want Windows 7. – if not, then it will be pretty much the same set up anyway.
Burn the ISO file to a DVD disc.
Once finished take the disc out.
Restart the computer and enter your BIOS screen.
Navigate to the “BOOT” settings, and set your DVD Drive as the first boot device (no need to change it back after, it’s fine.)
When you have set the DVD drive as the “first boot device”, re-insert the disc.
Navigate to the setting within the BIOS that says something like – SAVE CHANGES, AND RESTART
If everything goes to plan, when your computer restarts, a few seconds later you’ll have a message that says something like – PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM DVD
Just hit the space bar.
The DVD will start to load.
The setup will finally start and it will ask you to set up your language / keyboard and time settings.
Hit the INSTALL NOW button.
Agree to the licence terms (the usual rubbish that you get when installing software)
When it asks you which type of installation you want, choose CUSTOM (ADVANCED)
You will now see your hard drive & a number of partitions (if more than one)…. Make sure you know which one you want to install Windows on.
Click on it ONCE – just to select it.
Click on DRIVE OPTIONS (ADVANCED)
And then click FORMAT
You dont really need to go for the FULL format, the QUICK one will do.
Once it’s formatted the hard drive (the bit that you selected) click NEXT to carry on with the Windows installation.
Windows will now start to install all the files.
Your computer will eventually restart.
And that’s about it.
REMEMBER, your DVD drive is still set as the first boot device… and you will most likely still have the windows disc in the computer when it restarts, so when you see this message again “PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM DVD” – DONT PRESS ANYTHING, Because you’re done with the disc, you just want to load Windows.
Remember to do your windows updates.
Hope this helps.

Plenty of tutorials on Youtube for this.

Here is one.
He uses a slightly different method from me. Instead of selecting “FORMAT” he selects “DELETE”. It’s pretty much the same thing.
I just use the format option. All down to personal choice really.
